Meet Caron Transportation Systems
Manual processes couldn’t keep up with growth
For nearly 80 years, Caron Transportation Systems has built a reputation as one the most trusted carriers of dangerous goods in North America. Headquartered in Sherwood Park, Alberta, with terminals in Edmonton, Calgary, Leduc and Saskatoon, Caron hauls high-risk materials like liquid chemicals, dry bulk, and aggregates like gravel and coal—loads that demand strict regulatory compliance, real-time monitoring, and consistent safety protocols for every trip.
But as Caron grew, managing its operations became increasingly complex. Their safety team was spending hours each week manually tracking speeding events and coaching drivers. Risky behaviours—like harsh braking and rapid acceleration—were negatively affecting their carrier profile score, while paper-based inspections and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) were slowing down workflows and increasing the team’s administrative burden.
Meanwhile, drivers were contending with increasingly severe weather—ranging from heavy snow and black ice in the winter to spring thaws and summer wildfires. These conditions often resulted in highway closures and heightened driving risks across Caron’s vast service area, which stretches from the Dempster Highway in the Yukon—known to open and close multiple times a day—to the Northwestern United States.

A single platform to drive safety, efficiency, and visibility
Caron needed a technology partner that could streamline operations, digitize manual processes, and—most importantly—advance their mission of keeping drivers and the communities they serve safe.
After evaluating multiple providers, Caron chose Samsara’s fully integrated Connected Operations™ Platform. By combining AI Dash Cams, advanced fleet telematics, Connected Workflows, and streamlined communication in the Samsara Driver App, Caron gained centralized, 24/7 visibility across its entire fleet.
To ensure a smooth rollout, Caron adopted a transparent, phased approach designed to build trust and minimize driver apprehension. The safety team clearly communicated that AI Dash Cams were intended to protect drivers and exonerate them from false claims. Terminal managers maintained discretion over when and how footage was used with a focus on safety, training, and incident response.
Caron also organized driver focus groups to address questions, gather feedback, and refine internal policies. These sessions informed clear usage guidelines, improved transparency, and fostered driver buy-in—leading to high adoption rates and minimal resistance once the technology was fully deployed.
Reducing safety events by 40% with real-time alerts and coaching
Since implementing Samsara AI Dash Cams, Caron has achieved significant improvements in fleet safety, risk reduction, and driver performance. The company has cut severe speeding alerts by 90%—dropping from 150–250 per day to just 10–20 per week—and reduced total safety events by 40%. Among new trainees, incidents declined by 37% following the rollout of dual-facing dash cams. Video footage has also proven critical for defending drivers against false claims, helping Caron avoid millions in potential liability and safeguard its reputation.
