The Challenge
Gaps in fleet visibility increased safety risks
Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, CES Energy Solutions is a leading provider of consumable chemical solutions across the oilfield lifecycle. With operations spanning Western Canada and all major U.S. basins, CES' divisions—including Canadian Energy Services, AES Drilling Fluids, PureChem Services, and Jacam Catalyst—support some of North America's largest and most complex energy producers.
With teams operating in remote, high-risk environments, on-the-road safety was an ongoing challenge. Field personnel often traveled long distances to reach oil and gas sites, navigating highways, rural backroads, and rugged resource roads with tightly enforced speed limits. These routes wound through dense forests, open prairies, mountainous terrain, and active industrial zones—each with its own hazards. Workers frequently faced unpredictable conditions such as blowing snow, hail, freezing rain, thick fog, and wildfires that could trigger sudden evacuation orders. In these mixed environments, even minor gaps in fleet visibility could lead to serious consequences.
Limited insight into driver behaviour made it difficult for safety teams to proactively identify risks or respond effectively. CES needed a more reliable way to monitor fleet activity, support drivers in the field, and maintain visibility in dynamic operating conditions.
"Samsara gives us the visibility we need to investigate incidents with confidence. Instead of relying on secondhand accounts or assumptions, we can see exactly what happened and make decisions based on facts."

The Solution
A data-driven approach to strengthening driver safety
To elevate driver safety and reduce risk across its fleet, CES Energy Solutions equipped more than 1,900 vehicles—spanning all its divisions—with Samsara's AI Dash Cams and Vehicle Gateways. The rollout focused on high-impact safety metrics such as mobile phone usage, inattentive driving, and seatbelt compliance.
Real-time in-cab alerts give drivers the chance to self-correct instantly, preventing risky behaviours before they escalate. This proactive approach also streamlines coaching—reducing the need for manual reviews and ensuring safety conversations happen when they're most relevant. By combining real-time alerts with a structured review process, CES can quickly identify policy violations, address them consistently, and reinforce positive habits—driving significant gains in safety performance across the entire fleet.
Cameras & Video
Reducing risky driving behaviours by up to 95%
Within 6 months of implementing AI Dash Cams, CES achieved measurable safety improvements—including a 95% reduction in mobile phone usage, a 90% decrease in inattentive driving, and an 84% drop in seatbelt violations. With real-time visibility into driver behaviour and road conditions, CES can proactively coach drivers, respond to incidents faster, and support safer decision-making across its field operations.

Fleet Telematics
Enabling safer decisions with live fleet visibility
Since implementing Samsara's fleet telematics, CES has strengthened safety performance and increased visibility across daily operations. With real-time GPS tracking and detailed trip history, safety leaders can monitor driver behaviour, respond to issues as they arise, and provide reliable safety data to customers. As a result, CES has improved reporting accuracy and maintained a lower incident rate than many of their competitors.
