Summit Materials: Raising the bar for safety and sustainability
Learn how one of the leaders in construction materials leverages the Connected Operations Cloud to progress their ambitious safety and sustainability goals.
Meet Summit Materials
12 OPERATING COMPANIES
To achieve their ESG goals, Summit Materials needed a partner with better data reliability that could improve visibility across their distributed operations.
Summit’s vision is to be the most socially-responsible integrated construction materials solution provider on the market. Previously, their solutions for telematics, safety, and site visibility were decentralized, causing gaps in their data and reporting. Furthermore, vast operations spanning 22 U.S. states and British Columbia, Canada, meant it was difficult to track how they progressed against their goals. Summit sought a technology partner that could bring all their over the road fleet safety, emissions, and fuel consumption data into one single platform.
Unparalleled data and visibility to improve reporting
With the Samsara Connected Operations Cloud, Summit was able to consolidate their technology providers, improve data accuracy, and decrease preventable accidents.
Increasing driver engagement with gamification
To get drivers on board with their new video-based safety system, a few of Summit’s operating companies got creative and rolled out a March Madness-style driver safety competition. They made brackets, teamed up drivers (to encourage friendly competition), and made eliminations based on Samsara Safety Scores. Bracket winners were then crowned “Samsara Champions” and moved on to the next round. Eliminated drivers were moved to “wildcard” brackets to keep them engaged.
Eventually, winners received gift cards as a reward for their safe driving. By leveraging Samsara's easy-to-use reporting and gamification tools, Summit successfully built trust with drivers and incentivized safer driving. As a result, Summit was able to reduce preventable incidents by 50%.
Ensuring a focus on safety at every stage of operations
After implementing Samsara AI Dash Cams, Summit saw a significant increase in driver engagement and safety. With a more reliable system, Summit is able to quickly retrieve incident footage, train drivers on safe driving practices, and reward drivers with the best Safety Scores across regions. This has resulted in a 50% decrease in preventable incidents in one year.LEARN MORE
Vehicle telematics that goes beyond GPS tracking
Reduce costs with better fuel management
Before Samsara, Summit was tracking fuel usage based on fuel purchased, rather than fuel used. With Vehicle Gateways, Summit has been able to take control of their fuel economy and get better data with Samsara Fuel Reporting. Visibility into fuel trends helps identify inefficient or abnormal activity. Fuel Reports delivered directly to their inbox help them monitor vehicle performance, reduce idle time, and improve fuel efficiency. As a result, Summit is saving $1.8 million per year in fuel costs.
Advanced fuel data powers accurate emissions reporting
With the goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, Summit puts a large focus on monitoring fuel usage and idling across their fleet to improve miles per gallon. But with inaccurate data on their fuel consumption, actionable goals were difficult to set.
By closing the gaps in their data with plug-and-play Samsara Vehicle Gateways, Summit can more accurately record emissions figures and set meaningful targets, saving $1.8 million per year in fuel costs. Streamlining their fuel management is a key part of Summit’s ongoing ESG initiative, as they aim towards a 75% reduction in emissions across their business.LEARN MORE
Learn about integrations
The Samsara open API
With Samsara’s open API, Summit will be able to access all of their operational data from their other programs in one place. Processes that were previously manual—such as capturing vehicle hours and manually inputting them into their maintenance program—are now completely seamless, saving both time and money.
For example, Summit used Samsara’s open API to build an integration with Microsoft Business Intelligence. With access to real-time data on fuel usage, consumption, idle time, and emissions, Summit can now track fuel data with ease, and provide regular report-outs to regional managers.
Data & Integrations
Integrations power more actionable data
After standardizing their fleet and onsite security technology with the Samsara platform, Summit was able to further consolidate their operational data via integrations.
With the Samsara open API, Summit’s IT is excited to integrate their maintenance program and carbon emissions tracking, connecting the dots between disparate data sources and unlocking more actionable insights.LEARN HOW
Learn about Samsara Site Visibility
Secure access and visibility across sites
Summit saw a great opportunity to integrate their onsite security and safety with Samsara. By centralizing video management across their expansive and dispersed sites, Summit is now able to view footage remotely and ensure employee safety from anywhere.
High-definition site cameras extend outdoor visibility
Since a large part of their operations are outdoors—often in rugged and dangerous environments—Summit was looking for a consolidated video solution to help keep workers safe in the field.
With Samsara Site Cameras and Site Gateways, Summit has been able to keep their existing cameras as well as introduce additional cameras across their terminals. Powerful AI features allow their team to proactively spot unsafe behaviors and correct them before incidents occur.LEARN MORE
