The Challenge

Manual tracking and a 72-hour footage limit created blind spots

Whissell Contracting has spent more than fifty years building the underground utilities, earthworks, and heavy haul infrastructure that supports Alberta's growth. Running operations across Calgary, Lethbridge, and Leduc means contending with Alberta's Chinook winds—warm, dry gusts of air that blow down from the Rocky Mountains—and dense clay ground that turns an active job site into a mud pit within hours.

Before Samsara, Whissell relied on its previous provider for telematics, along with forward-facing cameras that recorded to a physical SD card. The card held only 72 hours of footage before it began recording over itself. "There was only so much storage on that," said Nathan Power, General Manager of Equipment at Whissell Contracting. "If we weren't quick enough, we had the potential of losing the data that we required."

Tracking smaller, unpowered equipment, generators, water pumps, carb saws, and specialized tooling was an entirely manual process built on spreadsheets and verbal reports from site foremen. When a tool went missing, crews launched a phone tree followed by a manual site search that regularly ate one to two hours per site. Across the 10 to 12 active jobs Whissell runs at once, that added up to as much as 24 hours of lost crew time per manual search, meaning the resulting downtime often cost more than the missing tool itself.

Whissell also recognized they were wasting thousands of dollars in fuel on unnecessary idling, but they had no objective way to separate necessary idling, like running a heater or air conditioner through Alberta's extreme weather, from unnecessary fuel waste.

The Solution

Consolidating telematics, AI dash cams, and asset tracking into one platform

In 2022, Whissell moved its entire fleet onto the Samsara Platform, deploying Vehicle Gateways for real-time engine diagnostics and GPS tracking, AI Dash Cams for proactive safety and automated incident detection, Camera Connectors to bring auxiliary vehicle cameras into the same dashboard, and, eventually, Asset Tags to monitor high-value unpowered tools. "The biggest thing that made us change providers is we wanted to have forward-facing cameras that were integrated into our telematics," said Power. "Samsara was the only one doing that very well."

The unified platform replaced manual SD card retrieval with on-demand, cloud-based video and swapped Whissell's spreadsheets for real-time, automated location data on its unpowered tools and equipment—giving every region a single screen for telematics, safety video, and asset tracking.

Equipment Tracking

Recovering $25,000 in stolen tools and eliminating costly job site downtime

With over 245 Asset Tags deployed on generators, water pumps, carb saws, fuel cubes, and specialized attachments, Whissell has recovered 100% of the equipment stolen in two separate incidents since January 2026, avoiding an estimated $20,000 to $25,000 in replacement costs and ending manual searches that once cost up to two hours per site.

Cameras & Video

Growing safe driving from 10% to over 50%, and cutting accident costs by up to $115,000

Since deploying Samsara AI Dash Cams, Whissell has grown the share of drivers meeting its safe driving threshold from 10% to over 50%, cutting preventable accidents by 40%, and avoiding an estimated $115,000 a year in accident-related costs. Under Alberta's Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD) rules, every video-proven exoneration also saves Whissell its $2,500 per-vehicle insurance deductible.

Fleet Telematics

Cutting fleet idling by up to 50% and saving thousands in fuel every month

With real-time idle and fuel data from Samsara Vehicle Gateways, Whissell is targeting a 25% to 50% reduction in fleet idling depending on vehicle class, a shift expected to save the company thousands of dollars a month in fuel and reduce unnecessary engine wear and maintenance costs.

Workforce Management

Catching fuel fraud in real time, and rewarding every safe trip

Through the Samsara Driver App, Whissell's 180+ light-duty and heavy-haul drivers submit fuel receipts directly from the field, letting the administrative team catch fuel-card discrepancies against actual engine burn in real time, and reward its safest drivers through Crew Coins.
