The Challenge
Paying the costs of legacy compliance
Matt Crosland, UK Area Manager for UK-Irish haulage and warehousing firm Mulgrew Haulage, knows as much as anyone about the pitfalls of legacy technology. When you’re sending 200 trailers per day across the Irish Sea, you don’t have time to waste on paper trails. But Mulgrew’s outdated systems were turning routine compliance into a risky and expensive guessing game that swallowed up eight hours at a time.
“We were spending days each month just sifting through tachograph reports filled with obsolete data”, Matt noted. Legacy technology imposed huge admin and cost burdens, but also created critical safety gaps. This left the company blind to potential risks, and vulnerable to false personal injury claims and ‘crash for cash’ scams.
We’re getting ahead of the game. We’re not just reacting to incidents—you can prevent accidents

The Solution
Once Matt realised the limitations imposed on him by these outdated systems, he championed a comprehensive transition to the Samsara Connected Operations Platform. After a meticulous year-long evaluation period, Mulgrew Haulage fully committed to the new technology to raise safety and efficiency standards.
Instead of juggling disjointed systems, Matt integrated Samsara's AI Dash Cams, Fleet Telematics, and Smart Compliance tools into a single, unified digital foundation. With real-time, cloud-based data on their whole fleet, the family-run business, headed up by Dermot Mulgrew, has moved from a reactive mindset towards a proactive culture of safety and efficiency.
Smart Compliance
Proactive tachograph compliance made easy
Since installing Samsara, Mulgrew have turned driving hours compliance from a paper-based process into a two-minute-per-driver morning check. This has reduced infringements by 20% and saved managers at each depot a full day of work every month.

Matt and his team use the Samsara platform to capture data from across their whole fleet. All this information has helped Mulgrew cut their technology overhead and halve their liability for common insurance claims, while also motivating safer driving behaviour.

Moving Forward With Samsara
With the system fully implemented, Matt is taking an active role to steer Mulgrew ever further towards a proactive operating model.
His team is currently doubling down on incentivising good driving habits, awarding a “driver of the month” goodie bag to the safest drivers.
He’s also got his eye on how to use Samsara to adapt to regulatory changes. From July 2026, new legislation will apply tachograph laws to 2.5 tonne vehicles, but Samsara’s digital infrastructure leaves Mulgrew well-prepared. Now that the company has instant data, rather than having to deal with month-old infringements, Matt can retrain drivers on the new rules immediately.
The company is also leveraging their dramatic reduction in high-risk behaviours to renegotiate with their insurer. Armed with watertight evidence on meaningful changes in driving behaviours, Mulgrew are on track to secure their lowest insurance costs in three years.
Reflecting on Samsara’s impact, Matt noted that “you wouldn’t turn it off—you’d be in a much worse place”. That’s why Mulgrew have signed a five-year partnership with Samsara, and we look forward to helping them reach new milestones in safety and efficiency.
