The appeal came at Samsara’s Manchester User Group in October, where more than 70 customers and prospects heard first-hand from the charity Veterans into Logistics, which helps ex-forces personnel retrain as HGV drivers and start new careers in the transport industry.
Founded in 2020 by former soldier Darren Wright, Veterans into Logistics provides free training and mentoring for those leaving the Armed Forces and those who have fallen on hard times. In just a few short years, the charity has helped more than 1,000 veterans gain their HGV licences and kickstart a career on the road.
Not only is the charity doing valuable work with veterans, it’s also helping to narrow the skills gap in an industry crying out for new drivers.
Darren set up Veterans into Logistics—which has forged close links with major employers including Asda, Wincanton, and JJX Logistics-–after his own experience of struggling to adjust to civilian life after serving in the army.
“Getting my HGV licence gave me structure, stability and purpose,” said Darren. “It put me back into society. That’s why I founded Veterans into Logistics—to support other ex-forces personnel and help them transition into meaningful employment.
He explained how veterans represent a ready-made pool of skilled, safety-conscious drivers, many of whom already have experience operating heavy vehicles and managing logistics under pressure.
Many also bring unique traits such as discipline, leadership, teamwork, adaptability, and rigorous safety awareness. At a time when the UK continues to face driver shortages, recruiting veterans is a tried and tested way to boost supply and support long-term sustainability for transport businesses.
“Veterans into Logistics has a proven track record, with retention rates for veterans placed via the charity estimated at over 90% with employers praising their discipline, resilience, and ability to handle pressure.
“My aim is to train every single person leaving the Armed Forces so they don’t become homeless,” he said.
In July 2025, Samsara became a Gold Partner of the charity, formalising its commitment to helping more veterans into professional driving roles.
As part of the partnership, Samsara will actively promote the charity’s work while also providing access to hardware linked to its Connected Operations Platform. They will also encourage their employees to volunteer to help the charity in its day-to-day operations.
“We’re proud to partner with Veterans into Logistics to help more ex-service personnel into meaningful work,” said Donna Walker, Safety and Security Manager, Samsara, and a former member of the Royal Navy. “We were delighted to use our Manchester SUG as a platform to help Darren and his team recruit more firms.
“Supporting our Veteran communities isn’t just about doing good. There is also a strategic business advantage, especially in addressing the urgent need for skilled logistics professionals.
“Even if organisations aren’t actively recruiting veterans into logistics roles today, understanding the power of these groups and strategic partnerships can pave the way for future talent acquisition and industry collaboration," she said.
