“At M Group Services, our key safety message is that nothing is so important that we cannot take the time to do it safely. With so many vehicles out at any one time, incidents can happen. Our job is to keep the number of road traffic incidents to an absolute minimum because lives and jobs are at stake if we don’t. That’s why we turned to Samsara.”

Tony Draper, Head of SHEQ, M Group Services Plant & Fleet Solutions

Challenge: To reduce road traffic incidents and related insurance premiums

Products: Samsara Vehicle Gateways, Dual-facing dash cams, Enhanced safety system

Solution: AI-powered insights give the information and visibility needed to prevent accidents before they happen

Taking the time to do it safely

M Group Services is the leading essential infrastructure services provider operating within the water, energy, transport, and telecommunication sectors across the UK and Ireland. M Group Services Plant & Fleet Solutions (MGSPFS), is responsible for the supply and management of specialist equipment and vehicles across the whole Group.

Detecting and capturing risk

MGSPFS prides itself on its strong culture of safety and efficiency. With so many vehicles on the road at any one time, it was a continuing challenge to reduce the risk of incidents happening. The team needed better visibility of road incidents to pre-empt and prevent them.

MGSPFS began working with Samsara in 2020, installing video-based safety technology that enabled tracking for all their vehicles, and starting to build a long-term safety programme. Dual-facing AI dash cameras allow the team to monitor the context in real time via Samsara’s remote telematics portal. They have also been able to leverage in-cab audio alerts that warn drivers of risk factors such as tailgating, speeding, or mobile phone usage.

A new era of technological collaboration

In 2022, MGSPFS wanted to strengthen its fleet safety capabilities further and enhance its driver coaching programme. The team brought in Samsara, and technology suppliers, Brucom and Motormax, to work on creating a new system that provides super-fast health and safety insights for drivers as they are working.

The result is an industry-first safety system that was highly commended in the Fleet Safety Innovation Award at the UK Fleet Champion Awards hosted by road safety charity Brake.
