Samsara Safety Report: AI helps reduce crash rates by nearly 75%

Today marks a major milestone in fleet safety. We published the Samsara Safety Report: Benchmarking the Future of Fleet Safety, a first-of-its-kind global analysis that shows how artificial intelligence is improving road safety at scale.

Based on an analysis of aggregated and anonymized data from more than 2.6K fleets worldwide, this report provides one of the clearest pictures yet of how AI is fundamentally changing real-world driving behavior and reducing risk across the transportation ecosystem. 

Key findings include:

• With Samsara, fleet safety improvements occur quickly and compound over time: Within the first six months on Samsara, fleets with 175+ vehicles in aggregate see a 48% decrease in harsh events and 84% decrease in mobile usage. These improvements continue to strengthen over time; by month 30, customers see a 69% decrease in harsh events and 96% decrease in mobile usage. Larger fleets (500+ vehicles) see even greater improvements: an 84% decrease in harsh events and 98% decrease in mobile usage by 30 months.

• Fleets using Samsara’s complete AI safety solution achieve the greatest impact: Historical data shows that customers adopting Samsara typically experience a 35–40% aggregate reduction in crashes over time; however, fleets with 175+ vehicles that implement the full AI safety solution—including Dual-Facing AI Dash Cams, in-cab alerts, and AI coaching—see ~75% decrease in crash rate over 30 months.

• Dual-facing dash cams are more than twice as effective: When isolating safety improvements by camera type, customers who implement Dual-Facing Dash Cams see an aggregate reduction in crash rate 2x greater than customers who implement Front-Facing Dash Cams alone. Dual-Facing Dash Cams provide full visibility into both what’s happening on the road and how the driver is behaving—making it possible to alert drivers to risky behaviors like drowsiness and mobile usage. This creates a highly effective feedback loop that changes driver behavior.

• Samsara customers see better CSA scores: These safety improvements deliver meaningful impact for our customers, including significant improvements in Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) scores. In aggregate, fleets with 175+ vehicles see a 43% improvement in their Unsafe Driving score, 57% improvement in their HOS Compliance score, and 83% improvement in their Controlled Substances/Alcohol score after 30 months with Samsara.

The Samsara Safety Report quantifies safety improvements over the first 30 months of tenure on the Samsara platform, revealing a step-change in safety performance for Samsara customers. 

Within the first six months, fleets with 175+ vehicles in aggregate see a 48% decrease in harsh events, 4% decrease in speeding, and 84% decrease in mobile usage. Improvements continue to strengthen over time, demonstrating the long-term value of Samsara’s technology. After 30 months with Samsara, customers see a 69% decrease in harsh events, 23% decrease in speeding, and 96% decrease in mobile usage.

Larger fleets see even greater reductions in risky behaviors. Fleets with 500+ vehicles see an 84% decrease in harsh events, 23% decrease in speeding, and 98% decrease in mobile usage after 30 months.

The report also reveals that customers who implement Samsara’s complete AI safety solution see a significant decrease in crash rate. To understand how AI is accelerating safety outcomes, we compared the overall aggregated crash rate for fleets with 175+ vehicles to those that have implemented Samsara’s complete AI safety solution, the gold standard for improving safety and reducing crashes. The difference is striking: fleets with 175+ vehicles using the full AI suite—including dual-facing AI Dash Cams, in-cab alerts, and driver coaching—achieve a 73% reduction in crash rates over 30 months, nearly 2x compared to a 37% reduction among fleets overall.

These improvements—fewer risky behaviors and lower crash rates—deliver meaningful impact for our customers, including significant improvements in CSA scores for the publicly available Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). In aggregate, improving customers see a 43% improvement in their Unsafe Driving score, 57% improvement in their HOS Compliance score, 35% improvement in their Vehicle Maintenance score, 83% improvement in their Controlled Substances/Alcohol score, and 59% improvement in their Driver Fitness score.

Powerful insights from one of the world’s largest operational datasets

Beyond fleet-level outcomes, the Samsara Safety Report highlights regional and industry patterns that detail how geography, infrastructure, and enforcement shape risk. Canada records the lowest crash rates globally (–9%) but higher-than-baseline speeding (+38%), while Western Europe reports the lowest speeding (–61%) and the highest rate of harsh events (+65%). Mexico shows the highest mobile phone usage (+238%) and crash rate (+60%), suggesting distracted driving remains a leading risk factor.
