Last March our team’s work lives were drastically changed, along with so many others’ around the world. In the midst of a global pandemic, we suddenly found ourselves at home with our partners, families, roommates, and pets working remotely to continue to support our customers (many of whom are essential businesses) and drive our business forward.
Over the past year, we’ve seen the pandemic fundamentally change the way people work. According to recent studies, working preferences have increasingly changed to embrace more flexible and hybrid working models.
83% of workers surveyed by Future Forum stated that they want a more flexible way of working.
According to Prudential’s Pulse of the American Worker survey, 68% of US workers would prefer a hybrid workplace model after the pandemic ends.
More than 50% of workers want to work from home 3 or more days a week, according to a McKinsey & Company report.
Running a feedback loop is an important part of our culture at Samsara so we sent a survey to employees to incorporate their feedback into our planning. The results were clear: Employees want flexibility and we see this continuing well beyond the pandemic.
We have always operated with a growth mindset at Samsara and we saw it peak this past year when team members quickly adopted creative ways of working. The team remained highly productive while working from home (even being named the second-fastest growing company in the Americas according to Financial Times).
Based on this data, we developed our future of work approach to provide certainty for our team about future work options and a timeline for returning to the office.
What’s the future of work at Samsara?
The future of work at Samsara is rooted in giving our employees flexibility—through remote working options and regular in-person time which we believe drives innovation and builds stronger, more collaborative relationships across teams. We also hope that this flexibility will allow us to also hire talented new team members from areas beyond our office locations as we continue to grow. Here are the work options for Samsara employees:
Hybrid model: Our hybrid model is structured to support those who wish to work two “core days” in the office and use the remaining three days of the week as “flex days” where they can work at home or in the office. We anticipate that the majority of our employees will opt into the hybrid model.
Fully remote: Depending on the role and team, we’re providing an option for employees to be fully remote.
Full time in the office: Certain roles will be expected to remain in the office five days a week. Work from home will be allowed with prior approval.
Our goal is to give employees plenty of time to think about and plan for their future and decide what working option is right for them.
Our new normal—what’s next?
Last year, we shared that employees would continue to work from home through July 2021. While we have made great progress, there is still a great deal of uncertainty around the pandemic and we want to make sure everyone feels comfortable before returning to the office.
So rather than rush, we’re working on a new phased approach for returning to work. As cities, states, and countries begin to reopen, employees will be able to voluntarily return to the office if they choose to do so through the remainder of 2021. Otherwise, we are planning to have everyone in their “new normal” starting in January 2022.
How are we supporting and connecting our employees?
While we’ve been working from home, we continue to find ways to stay connected and be there for each other. To ensure employees receive the latest updates and information, we host monthly Town Hall meetings and AMAs with senior leaders. We’ve held a variety of virtual events, including fun team-based activities, a virtual holiday party, and even a few virtual company and sales kick-off events.
We also know an optimal work set-up, the right hardware and technology, and a focus on self care was key. We offer office equipment pick ups and virtual self ergonomic assessments—shipping any ergo equipment needed to employees’ homes. Another new benefit we established this year was our Hootfund, an expense fund for employees to purchase a host of products, tools, and apps across health and wellness, family and home, and professional growth to help make working from home and balancing priorities a little easier.
While it’s been an extraordinarily challenging and unpredictable time, we are excited about our new flexible ways of working in the future!
