Athens-Clarke County’s keys to success

Using DVIR to streamline back office workflows

In order to be more efficient, Athens-Clarke County was looking for a way to eliminate their old paper-based process for DVIRs and Documents. Before they went paperless, their back office admin would spend 3 hours per week scanning and filing more than 12,400 paper documents. Now, drivers can complete all forms within the Samsara Driver App, allowing the department to save time and reduce errors.

Submit DVIRs on the go

Drivers can submit DVIRs directly from their fingertips using the Samsara Driver App, saving precious time. It’s easy for drivers to transition from paper to Samsara DVIR as it contains already used fields by drivers, and simple functions like walkaround image capture.

Customize your DVIRs for your fleet

Samsara DVIR gives the ability to design your DVIR using different fields, like required/non required or vehicle type. Customers create their own workflow on DVIR, and use customization to generate new insights and optimize processes.

More efficient routes keep costs low for the community

The longer a route takes to complete, the more time and money it costs the County. That’s why the Solid Waste Department put a big focus on improving routing efficiency and making sure drivers could execute their routes in less time, all while being safe. Thanks to their improvements, the department was able to increase fuel efficiency by 58% and decrease fuel usage by 19%, allowing costs to stay low for their customers.

Streamline the driver experience

The Samsara Driver App makes it easy for drivers to see exactly where they need to be, and when they need to be there. Upcoming routes, tasks, and job details are updated instantly and can be accessed in one place. Make it quick and easy for drivers to see upcoming jobs and share information with your back office, with app-based document capture and two-way instant messaging.

Centralize operational insights

Find opportunities to improve on-time performance and customer satisfaction, with centralized insights into route performance and driver behavior. Streamline recordkeeping and keep information synced between your customers, drivers, and back office.

Using gamification to improve driver safety

In order to provide top-tier service for their community, Athens-Clarke County recognizes the importance of operating a safe fleet. Despite holding monthly safety meetings, the Solid Waste Department lacked critical driver safety data on speeding or harsh events, making coaching conversations more difficult. With insight into driver behavior from Samsara, Jones and his team can now track driver safety metrics and use Driver Safety Scores to benchmark progress. Each month, drivers with a perfect score are entered into a drawing for a gift card. Since they implemented driver scorecards and coaching tools with Samsara, Athens-Clarke County has seen a 50% reduction in harsh driving events.

Establish a driver rewards program

A driver rewards program is a powerful way to align driver incentives with best practices and make safe driving a priority. Align your fleet’s culture and incentives around driver safety. Be transparent about driver rankings, build data-driven rewards programs, and show evidence of exoneration to get buy-in across the team and ensure driver retention.

Track safety trends and improvements over time

Identify risky driving practices like distracted driving and measure changes in your safety culture over time with driver scorecards and trend reports.

Top Fleet Awards honor fleets that demonstrate outstanding safety, customer service, performance, and community impact.
