Hats off to drivers: Why we’re celebrating professional drivers for an entire month

Professional drivers wear more hats than they get credit for. 

Whether they're driving a truck, bus, or crane, they get things and people where they need to be. They’re architects who know just how to make a cab feel like home, with a coffee maker in the cup holder, a griddle for a real dinner, and a little room for a quick workout between stops. 

They're navigators, always steady under pressure. They stay sharp through hours of driving on empty highways where the real challenge is boredom, not danger. When a car cuts in too close, they react calmly instead of slamming the brakes.

A lot of drivers loved this work before they ever did it for a living. Some fell for the road as kids, pretending their bikes were big rigs long before they could drive. Others have spent decades in the same seat and would choose it all over again tomorrow.

A few years ago, people were stuck at home, ordering everything instead of going out to get it, and it still showed up. Drivers were the reason. For a while, everyone noticed. That kind of attention tends to fade once the moment that caused it passes. The work never stopped, whether anyone was watching or not.

Drivers show up because they're great at this work and they love it, without expecting anything back. Samsara wanted to make sure the world noticed anyway. This month, we’re tipping our hats to drivers all around the world. 

Why September is for drivers 

There are already a few moments set aside to recognize drivers. Canada has its own National Trucking Week. The U.S. has National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. There's even a National Truckers Day every fall. We wanted to connect those moments, amplify the stories behind them, and give drivers even more. At Samsara, that's what putting drivers front and center means to us this year: one continuous celebration for drivers across trucks, buses, cranes, and more. 

This September, Samsara is calling it Driver Appreciation Month. You'll see drivers in new places and hear their stories, what they do, and why. You'll also see a few more things drivers deserve, like special discounts and savings they can use well past the end of this month. You’ll see firsthand exactly why we believe it’s so important to build with drivers, putting their input directly into new products and decisions. It’s why we created a competition just for drivers, to put top performers in the spotlight and give them real prizes. For fleets who want to say thanks on their own terms, we've also created a Recognition Toolkit to make it easy to recognize their drivers anytime they want, in their own words. 

A full month means more time to recognize drivers by name, more than once. It means more chances for the respect-on-the-road message to reach people who share the highway with drivers every day. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week gets it started. We just wanted to help keep it going.

The drivers you'll meet, and the room they deserve

This month is about putting drivers front and center and telling their stories.

Monica Williams drives a school bus for First Student. She watches for what other drivers miss, so every kid on her route gets home safe. "My favorite part about being a driver has to be the kids," she said, "seeing the excitement on their faces and the smiles."

Keith Carver has been driving for Tillamook Creamery for 13 years, and he still pays attention to every mile like it's his first. "Keep your head on a swivel at all times," he said. "Always be aware that anything can happen at any time, so you really need to be paying attention."

Ethlyn White drives for Coach USA. She's watched the same families reunite at her bus stop for years, and treats every one like her own. "I look at it like I'm commuting my own family," she said. "My kids are commuting on this bus too."

Monica, Keith, and Ethlyn are just a few of the drivers you'll meet this month. Meeting them is only half of it. The rest is making sure the world understands drivers well enough to work alongside them, so the road is safer for everyone who shares it.

For drivers, that starts with something simple: give them room. Most people on the highway have never sat in a truck cab, so they don't have a reference for what the driver beside them can and cannot see. A loaded trailer needs far more room to stop than a car does, and the mirrors leave blind spots wide enough to hide a full-size vehicle. Cutting into that gap removes the space it was there to protect.

Fixing that takes a few seconds of patience from every car on the road. Respect works both ways. Drivers show it every day in the way they do the job. This month, let's show it back.
