Director, Software Engineering - Routing
At Samsara, we’re changing how the world’s physical operations work. We help organizations with large operations move goods globally, maintain infrastructure, and respond to emergencies faster, safer, and more efficiently. Routing is central to powering these complex operations.
My team builds tools that manage routing from end to end—from ingesting orders to guiding drivers through their day. It takes advanced algorithms, real-time data, and a platform that can adapt on the fly.
Routing has traditionally been a time-consuming and manual process, frequently thrown off by unpredictable roadblocks like traffic, weather, and last-minute changes. With Samsara, routing becomes efficient and reliable through powerful, data-driven technology.
For Harris Ranch Beef, they used Samsara to transform their routing operations, helping to improve efficiency on the front lines.
“Before Samsara, Route Planners spent 3-4 hours a day planning routes," said Dale Rovito, VP of Fleet Operations at Harris Ranch. "Now we can do it in just 20-30 minutes. Route Planners save significant time and ultimately we generate faster, more efficient routes. We are consistently achieving reduction in daily route miles as well as fewer routes to serve our customers.”
Our Routing suite spans three core pillars—planning, execution, and the driver experience.
Route Planning is where customers bring in thousands of orders, assign them across vehicles, and optimize the day’s work.
Route Planning enables fleets to configure constraints around time windows, service durations, vehicle capacities, driver skills, and more. Then, with one click, the system generates an optimized plan. It’s fully automated and dynamic, but still flexible enough for dispatchers to make manual adjustments when needed.
After planning, it’s about execution. Samsara gives dispatchers live visibility into what’s actually happening out on the road.
Dispatchers can see who’s assigned to which route, track where drivers are in real time, and spot issues as they unfold, whether someone’s running late or off-route. The key to efficient routing operations is exception management: highlighting only what needs attention, so dispatchers can act quickly and confidently.
Below, you’ll see a live view of a route. This data also feeds back into Samsara, helping customers track key performance metrics and improve route planning over time.
The Driver App has evolved far beyond basic checklists. Today, the Driver App is a full in-cab experience with commercial-grade turn-by-turn navigation. We're often guiding heavy-duty vehicles, not just cars. This makes commercial navigation an entirely different process.
We have to account for the size and weight of heavy-duty vehicles, and restrictions like hazmat loads or school zones. This makes route accuracy mission-critical. Our goal is for drivers to never have to leave the app—it should guide them through their entire day, from their first stop to their last.
To meet that bar, we’ve developed the Driver App to be fast, reliable, and intuitive. We’re designing for the everyday worker in the field, and every detail matters. The opportunity here is huge: to make their jobs easier and safer, little by little, every day.
At Samsara, our data sets us apart. We process over 14 trillion sensor data points a year from millions of connected vehicles and assets, giving us an unmatched view of how the physical world moves. Turning that into real-world impact is a complex challenge.
We’re improving the “ground truth” data of the world by combining precise location data, real-time traffic conditions, road imagery from dash cams, and advanced AI models. The physical world changes fast, so we’re creating a dynamic, constantly updating view of the road that goes beyond any third-party map. This sets us up to deliver the most accurate, flexible, and reliable routing possible.
It’s a difficult problem, but our scale uniquely positions us to solve it: millions of sensors in the field, cameras capturing road conditions around the clock, and AI models that turn that data into real-time insight.
And none of it matters if the experience doesn’t hold up in the field. Our design team works side-by-side with customers, running hands-on research and testing to make sure insights show up at the right time and in the right way. This results in tools that feel natural because they match the way our customers already manage their operations.
We prioritize speed, autonomy, and customer context so engineers can focus on building what truly matters.
We start with the customer. Samsara’s technical teams have a uniquely close relationship with the people we build for. Engineers visit job sites, ride along with drivers, and see firsthand how our tools are used. That context leads to more intuitive decisions and more impactful products.
We move fast, together. Weekly roadmap reviews keep priorities flexible and engineers in the loop. If something changes or a better path emerges, we shift quickly.
We show our work. Engineers regularly demo what they’re building, from backend systems to UI prototypes. It creates a fast feedback loop and a culture of shared learning.
We use AI to unlock speed. Engineers use AI tools to break down tasks, write code across platforms, and troubleshoot faster so they can focus on the complex, high-impact problems. We prioritize giving our teams the best tools to move fast and deliver real impact.
At Samsara, we build products that truly matter. Our customers work on the frontlines—moving goods, maintaining infrastructure, and keeping communities safe—and their technology needs to keep up.
If you’re an engineer who thrives on solving tough problems, collaborating directly with customers, and delivering impactful products at speed, join the team.
