At JoyRide Logistics, a supported driver is a successful driver. This commitment to driver satisfaction and innovation has fueled their 28% increase in driver retention. By building a people-first culture in partnership with their drivers, JoyRide has evolved from a contractor model to a company that invests in their people with comprehensive benefits and career-long support. Steven Williams, a JoyRide professional driver, has over 20 years of experience and has earned JoyRide’s Elite Driver Award for two consecutive years. Beyond his reputation as a safe and reliable driver, he helped shape the benefits program that now supports his fellow drivers. Reflecting on his journey, Steven provides valuable insights into what it takes to be a professional driver, technology in the cab, and the power of patience on the road.

Q: What initially drew you to professional driving, and what keeps you passionate about it?

A: I’ve been driving professionally for over 20 years now, and the last five of those years have been with JoyRide Logistics. I’ve always been drawn to the open road and from a young age, being behind the wheel was always “it” for me. What keeps me passionate about this job is the peace of mind it brings. It offers a unique sense of tranquility—just me, my thoughts, and my music.

I really enjoy working independently. Out on the road, there are no distractions—it’s just about focusing on the task at hand and getting the job done. I also love the scenery—the sight of snow-capped mountains in Colorado is unforgettable. Those moments keep me coming back for more.

Q: What is one thing people might not understand about the life and work of a professional driver?

A: People often underestimate the sacrifice truck drivers make by spending so much time away from home. It’s not just a job—it’s a lifestyle. Raising a family as a truck driver is particularly challenging because the demands of the road keep you away for long stretches, which means you might miss milestones, holidays, and other important family events. Truck drivers have a unique perspective on the value of time spent at home—you learn to cherish every moment. It’s a constant balancing act that makes you truly appreciate the parts of life that many take for granted.

Q: You were part of JoyRide’s evolution to offer more comprehensive driver benefits. Can you tell us more about how the company supports the team?

A: When I first started at JoyRide, drivers were independent contractors. Adis, the company’s founder, had a vision to transition the workforce into employees and really invest in the people behind the wheel. I was lucky enough to be part of some of the conversations shaping that early transformation.

For example, when the company was developing its benefits package, I gave input on the things that matter most to drivers—paid vacation time, sick leave, retirement plans, and health coverage. Having these benefits in place has made a world of difference for us. It’s not just about the financial perks—it shows that JoyRide values our well-being, on and off the road.

Hearing new drivers talk about how great the benefits are always makes me smile because I know I had a role in making that happen. It’s proof that when companies and drivers work together, you can create something that really works for everyone.

Q: How have technologies like Samsara, including its AI features, changed the way you work and enhance safety?

A: Samsara technology has been a game-changer for me. The in-cab safety alerts are like having an extra pair of eyes on the road, reminding you of potential risks like lane departures or following too closely. Even as an experienced driver, these features are helpful—I can’t be 100% perfect all of the time, but the dash cams help fill in the gaps.

JoyRide was the first company I worked for that used dash cams, and my initial reaction was immediately positive. Before dash cams, there was often a bias assuming that truck drivers were at fault in any incident they were involved in. Now, with the footage, you have the truth about what actually happened, protecting drivers from false claims. There are also smaller perks, like avoiding speeding tickets thanks to the alerts. These features add another layer of security while helping me maintain safe habits. Overall, they make my job easier and give me peace of mind.

Q: You've won JoyRide's Elite Driver award two years in a row. What does that recognition mean to you?

A: Winning the Elite Driver Award for two years in a row is something I’m very proud of, and I strive to live up to that standard every year. To me, this achievement isn’t just about recognition—it reflects a commitment I made when I joined JoyRide to excel in every aspect of my role.

What makes this job interesting is that no two days are the same. Sometimes, you arrive at a delivery point and face unexpected delays or challenges. Other times, you have to adapt to a variety of personalities. In those moments, patience is everything. It’s about staying calm, recognizing what’s in your control and what’s not, and working towards the best solution. Awards like this remind me why patience and resilience are so important in our profession.

Q: What advice do you give to new drivers joining the JoyRide team?

A: My advice comes down to three simple but important points: safety, rest, and patience. Always prioritize safety first—you can’t rush this job. Whether it’s checking your mirrors or following the speed limit, it’s better to get it done right than fast.

Equally important is rest. Driving while fatigued puts you and everyone else on the road at risk. Get your sleep and take breaks when you need to. Waiting for a stop? Don’t waste that downtime. Take a nap, or go for a quick walk outside the truck—it’ll leave you feeling refreshed and alert.

Lastly, understand that this job isn’t just about driving, it’s about managing your mindset. Each day will present its challenges, but keeping a calm attitude can make even the most stressful situation manageable. Follow the process, use the tools JoyRide provides, and remember, the journey is as important as the destination.
