Samsara’s Engineering team in Europe is on a mission — to recruit new top talent to meet the growing demand for the software that powers physical operations.

The EMEA Engineering team is broadly split between the UK and Poland working specifically on telematics projects for the whole of Samsara.

Together, they design and write the software that delivers functions such as Samsara’s fuel efficiency and eco-driving tools, routing, and vehicle maintenance. They’re also responsible for compliance tools such as tachographs.

The work — which addresses real-world issues — is rewarding with problem-solving a key part of the engineering challenge.

To give you a taste of what life is like, we asked four engineers from different disciplines across the team to explain what life is like working at Samsara.

Marcin Uszyński, Senior Software Engineer

Marcin Uszyński

Marcin works in the Product Integrations Team designing and developing solutions that integrate Samsara systems with external data providers and consumers. Before joining Samsara in 2023, Marcin spent more than a year as a Senior Data Engineer working at a fintech company behind a mobile bank in the UK.

Why did you join Samsara?

There were a couple of reasons. First, I wanted to expand my skill set and use different technologies. Second, I was attracted by the competitive salary that stood out in the market.

What do you like the most about the engineering challenges you face?

In Samsara there are a lot of microservices, data flows, APIs, databases, and external integrations. There is a strong focus for each team on maintaining documentation for their ownership areas so it's very easy to learn about them.

As for development, I like the design stage the most when I have to connect new pieces of architecture with the existing ecosystem.

What’s it like working at Samsara?

It's just great. Samsara has a great engineering culture. The onboarding for the new hires is super fast. By my second week, I'd already deployed my first production code. It's also very easy to collaborate with other teams as each of them maintains their own open Slack channel and you can post any questions there.

What advice would you give someone looking to join Samsara?

You have to like working with people as many tasks require you to interact with multiple teams. You also need an open mind since many of the solutions can have many alternatives. However, the most important part is the focus on customers. You need to be aware of every change in the system and how that may affect the end user.

Anthony Landau, Senior Software Engineer

Anthony Landau

Anthony works in the Compliance team automating paper-based processes that record drivers’ hours in accordance with tachograph legislation and replacing them with an app and several dashboards. Before joining Samsara in 2023, Anthony spent four years working in the SMS space developing APIs.

Why did you join Samsara?

I wanted to work on — and learn —  something completely new. Before Samsara, I was a back-end developer working with Java. But Samsara was happy to hire me into a full stack role working on both the back-end and front-end of systems. I also wanted to push myself professionally. What I found at Samsara is exactly what I was looking for!

What do you like the most about the engineering challenges you face?

The variety! Each day I learn something different. Sometimes, it’s because I use a new tool or I spend time exploring a niche bit of functionality that my team is responsible for. Then again, sometimes it’s great to be able to become more familiar with front-end work or a new programming language.

What’s it like working at Samsara?

Everyone’s very friendly. And there’s a real feeling that the company cares about its employees. There’s also lots of cool perks like a quarterly Hootfund, which pays for some fun activities or personal development. There’s loads of other stuff too — it’s a real pleasure to work here.

What advice would you give someone looking to join Samsara?

Whether it’s personal or professional development you’re after, Samsara offers it all.

Aleksandra Laska, Software Engineer

Aleksandra Laska

Aleksandra is a software engineer in the Product Integrations team, taking data from third-party strategic partners via APIs so that it can be used by downstream Samsara systems. This allows customers to use OEM-sourced data to power their most business-critical Samsara workflows — such as compliance and reporting — without installing any Samsara hardware. Before joining Samsara, Aleksandra worked on her own projects, including building an e-commerce web page as part of a study-based engineering project.

Why did you join Samsara?

Initially, I was attracted to Samsara because I was interested in its products and solutions, and the meaningful role they play in society. On top of that, a full-stack engineering position at Samsara set the bar high and meant I had to challenge myself.

The professionalism of the recruitment process —  and Samsara's representatives — confirmed that I wanted to join this company.

What do you like the most about the engineering challenges you face?

The most appealing part of the engineering challenges I face at Samsara is the diversity of problems. I have the opportunity to work on different areas of an app as well as developing new solutions, working on customer issues and on-call investigations.

Because software engineering at Samsara has such a broad spectrum of areas, we can get our hands on work that is always engaging and motivating. Constant challenges are crucial for the development of engineering skills.

What’s it like working at Samsara?

I find it really engaging. And I like the way our working environment promotes personal development and teamwork.

What advice would you give someone looking to join Samsara?

Don't be scared about changing stack. And don’t be put off by the long recruitment process. Like any job interview, make sure you’re well prepared. There’s plenty of information available on samsara.com.

Yasmine Zermoun, Software Engineer

Yasmine Zermoun

Yasmine works on the Telematics Platform team providing real-time visibility into vehicle diagnostics such as fuel usage, geolocation data, engine fault codes and more. Yasmine stumbled across Samsara when she was looking for a new role in Gdańsk after moving to Poland.

Why did you join Samsara?

For me, it’s the ‘people’. The interview process left a great impression on me because of the people I met from the recruiting and engineering teams. I liked the industry and found the safety aspect fascinating.

What do you like the most about the engineering challenges you face?

I love the fact that the engineering challenges we face every day have a real-world impact. Seeing that the work we do provides safer and more efficient solutions is very rewarding.

What’s it like working at Samsara?

It’s great! I like to work in the evenings sometimes, so having flexible hours is a plus.

What advice would you give someone looking to join Samsara?

The advice I would give to someone looking to join Samsara is, “Just go for it! It will all work out in the end!”
