The Challenge

A surprise renewal forced ABCO to rethink their approach to technology

ABCO Transportation is the largest truckload refrigerated (reefer) carrier based in Florida. Headquartered in Ocala and in business since 1993, ABCO services the eastern half of the United States, hauling for blue-chip food suppliers and grocery receivers. The carrier has more than doubled in size over the past decade and continues to grow quickly. For years, ABCO ran a patchwork of tools: one for ELD and mobile communications, and Lytx for safety cameras. Drivers felt the ELD was hard to use, and video capture from Lytx often ran 24 to 36 hours behind and was often blurry, creating exposure on claims and subrogation. "Our camera contract renewal forced us to look at what else was out there," said Sam Scott, President at ABCO Transportation. "In hindsight, we're glad they pushed us, because we ended up with a better platform."

The Solution

A consolidated solution for better integration, AI, and value

ABCO originally set out simply to upgrade their safety cameras, but they re-scoped the project around finding a consolidated platform that could not only replace their cameras, but their legacy ELD, and mobile communications. The team tested Samsara and Motive cameras in the same trucks, compared AI capabilities and product roadmaps, and weighed how each platform integrated with ABCO's TMS, McLeod. Based on ABCO's evaluation, by bringing everything into one package, Samsara stood out for its robust functionality, seamless McLeod TMS integration, and overall cost efficiency.

Reallocating up to 83 hours a month to high-value coaching and cutting inattentive driving 87%

With Samsara AI Dash Cams deployed fleet-wide, ABCO's safety team coaches faster and with greater accuracy, with dash cam video that distinguishes genuine distracted driving from false positives. Between April and May, ABCO saw an 87% decrease in inattentive driving. With Automated Coaching, Coaching Priority, AI-powered ride-alongs, weekly AI recaps, and in-cab AI that can answer driver questions en route, the ABCO team can now provide more touchpoints with drivers and are freed up to reach every driver weekly instead of monthly. Across roughly 250 drivers, that shift has reallocated an estimated 83 hours each month toward higher-value coaching across the fleet.

Avoiding 3,000 commercial-restricted routes in 90 days with Commercial Navigation

By moving drivers onto Samsara Commercial Navigation, ABCO replaced consumer GPS apps and manual address entry with navigation integrated into their fleet operations—aligned to their safety standards and connected to dispatch. This improved productivity and saved them roughly 200 hours of driver time across their fleet. Over a recent 90-day window, ABCO drivers avoided 3,000 restriction events, including more than 1,000 road segments with weight restrictions and nearly 300 potential low-bridge strikes, each one a possible fine, delay, or costly incident. Pairing navigation with Hours of Service in a single view has also improved trip planning and on-time performance.

Connected Maintenance

Laying the groundwork to run a paperless shop on one platform

ABCO is consolidating its maintenance operations onto Samsara, extending the same platform the team already trusts for safety and navigation. "Before Connected Maintenance, we were limited to whatever the DVIR told us. Now we can pull the fault codes ahead of time and know exactly what we're dealing with before the truck arrives," said Rob Cook, Shop Manager.

Reaching every driver with targeted training and automated nudges

ABCO uses Samsara Connected Training to assign focused, monthly safety education and keep it on track without manual chasing. Each cycle, the team assigns up to three targeted videos per driver based on fleet trends, delivered right on the Samsara Driver App. Automated reminders nudge drivers who fall behind, replacing the manual, month-end report pulls the team relied on before, so managers spend more time with drivers and less time chasing paperwork.
