Blind spots were a particular concern for Coach USA's large passenger buses

Coach USA, which includes Coach Canada and Megabus, operates a critical passenger transportation service across North America, connecting people to jobs, education, and essential services. Safety is the foundation of their business as they navigate heavy metropolitan traffic, construction, and severe weather in areas like New York City and Washington D.C. "Safety is first at Coach USA. We want to make sure that every person is safe around us, and that our drivers are aware of all sides of their bus," said Derrick Waters, CEO.

Before partnering with Samsara, Coach USA's approach to pedestrian safety was reactive, as they often were unaware of near misses or risky road behaviors until an incident occurred. Large buses have inherent blind spots, meaning drivers could not always see pedestrians or cyclists approaching the vehicle. "Traditionally, pedestrian safety has been reactive. We didn't know what was happening on the roadway," said Jason Louis, VP of Safety.

Without real-time visibility, their safety team relied on manual reporting and could not validate driver actions behind the wheel. To reach their "Destination Zero" goal of zero preventable accidents and injuries, Coach USA needed a technology partner that could provide additional support for their drivers.

The Solution

360-degree camera solution eliminates blind spots

Coach USA implemented Samsara's integrated platform, focusing on safety using AI Dash Cams and AI Multicam. "From the start, Samsara took the time to understand our needs instead of trying to sell us a product. They're an innovative and valuable safety partner," said Louis.

Samsara's safety solution provided the visibility and tools needed to support drivers in real time, strengthen proactive coaching, and streamline fleet operations. AI Multicam provides Coach USA with 360‑degree visibility using high‑resolution cameras around the bus to monitor blind spots and detect people. Pedestrian Collision Warning alerts notify drivers immediately with audible and visual cues when a pedestrian enters the vehicle's path, preventing high‑risk events.

All footage and detected events are automatically uploaded to their Samsara dashboard, giving safety teams instant access to video, event data, and automated insights for coaching. "Our 'aha moment' with AI Multicam was when we saw what was happening on the roadway. We didn't know what we didn't know until we had the video," said Louis. Paired with AI Dash Cams, Samsara's AI safety solution eliminates blind spots and provides risk detection to support drivers and protect Coach USA.

The Results

Transforming pedestrian safety with 360‑degree visibility and real‑time alerts

The shift from reactive to proactive safety transformed Coach USA's operations. By using Samsara's safety solution to identify hazards before they lead to accidents, the company experienced a 92% decrease in preventable incidents involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. General road safety also improved, with a 50% reduction in following-distance events and a 35% decrease in speeding events in just one year.

The technology also helps Coach USA defend against liability. They reduced the number of auto and bodily injury claims by 50%, while the total cost for claims dropped by 75%. Beyond external safety, dual-facing AI Dash Cams help enforce cell phone policies and protect drivers from fraudulent injury claims by providing clear video evidence of onboard events.

Importantly, Samsara allows Coach USA to move beyond coaching individual safety events to creating a "behavioral profile" for each driver.
