CR Jackson saves $120K by recovering stolen equipment with Asset Tracking
By consolidating their operations under a single integrated platform, CR Jackson gained full visibility across asset tracking and operations, driver safety, and vehicle diagnostics.
Meet CR Jackson
Lacking a single source of truth across equipment, vehicles, drivers, and the back-office was costing their business.Â
Based in South Carolina, CR Jackson is an infrastructure company focused on heavy highway construction, serving the Department of Transportation among other local municipalities. Prior to Samsara, CR Jackson used multiple vendors to handle processes such as compliance management, equipment tracking, and light fleet management. With their processes scattered across disparate systems and paperwork, they ran into challenges around asset protection, driver exoneration, and operational inefficiency.
After experiencing theft of expensive equipment on multiple occasions, CR Jackson sought a cost-effective and robust way to track their equipment and secure their operation. They needed a single integrated solution to unify their mission-critical processes and gain real-time visibility across their assets.
Integrated platform transforms their operations and reduces costs
With the Samsara Connected Operations Cloud, CR Jackson centralized their disparate systems and streamlined processes onto a single integrated and easy-to-use platform. Instead of distributing data and workstreams across multiple solutions, they are now able to connect their operations—improving visibility, reducing costs, and boosting efficiency.
Asset Tracking protects equipment and improves efficiency
Recovering lost or stolen assets reduces significant costsÂ
With expansive operations across South Carolina, CR Jackson was looking to optimize their asset management. Prior to Samsara, they manually recorded their inventory on paper and conducted extensive yard hunts. Due to limited visibility, they spent hours and gallons on fuel trying to locate assets. In addition, manual accounting of equipment for specific projects and job sites resulted in misplaced equipment and unplanned dormancy. In one example, a project team left a small roller half a mile up the road from the rest of their equipment, leading it to be forgotten upon project completion.
To better track their equipment, CR Jackson turned to Samsara’s Unpowered Asset Gateways, deploying them on a variety of different assets, such as skid steers, rollers, message boards, and pavers. Now, CR Jackson has full visibility into the location and status of their assets, streamlining their operations and digitizing their inventory reporting. In one instance, CR Jackson used real-time GPS tracking to quickly and efficiently course-correct a lowboy trailer that had gone in the wrong direction, saving both time and fuel. As a result of Samsara Asset Gateways, CR Jackson is able to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
Protect equipment from loss and theft
Prior to Samsara, CR Jackson had multiple arrow boards stolen that were not being tracked. With each arrow board costing $15,000, the losses were adding up. In response, CR Jackson adopted Samsara’s Asset Tracking solution to monitor and protect their assets from being stolen. In one example, CR Jackson’s skid steer loaders and an attachment were stolen from their construction yard. Despite the in-built tracker on the skid steer being disabled, Samsara’s GPS tracking and configurable check-ins on the new unpowered Asset Gateways enabled the back-office team to monitor the location of the stolen asset directly from their Samsara dashboard.
By frequently updating location check-ins, CR Jackson pinpointed the location of the stolen skid steer and shared it with the local law enforcement. Within 30 minutes, law enforcement had recovered CR Jackson’s skid steer, saving them $120,000.Â
“Using the AGs to recover our stolen equipment has been an added bonus and has paid off our investment in Samsara's Asset Tracking solution,” said Ryan Reedy.
Protecting assets from loss and improving their bottom lineÂ
CR Jackson needed a better way to track and optimize their equipment. By deploying Samsara’s new Unpowered Asset Gateways, they can now monitor their vehicles and equipment, all from one platform. Instead of spending time and fuel locating equipment in the field, they can now better allocate resources and streamline their operations.Â
With equipment theft on the rise, CR Jackson also leveraged Samsara’s Asset Tracking solution to recover a stolen skid steer loader, saving them over $120,000.
LEARN MOREReal-time visibility improves vehicle diagnostics
Streamline maintenance and improve vehicle lifespan
CR Jackson has over 200 vehicles in their light duty fleet. Previously, with their data distributed across two legacy solutions, they had limited visibility into their fleet’s fuel costs, vehicle usage, and downtime. Without real-time visibility, CR Jackson found it challenging to improve the lifetime of their vehicles.
By deploying Samsara Vehicle Gateways across their fleet, CR Jackson was able to unify their fleet operations within a single platform, as well as gain real-time visibility into vehicle diagnostics. CR Jackson can now proactively plan for maintenance and spot issues with real-time fault codes, engine hours, miles driven, and fuel usage data. By comparing this recent data to historical baselines, CR Jackson is able to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and extend vehicle lifetime.
Preventative approach to vehicle diagnostics improves fleet performance
Prior to Samsara, CR Jackson used two different legacy solutions that siloed vehicle data across systems. As a result, they had limited visibility into their fleet’s diagnostic data, so proactively maintaining their fleet was a challenge.
By deploying Samsara Vehicle Gateways, CR Jackson has centralized their fleet data within a single platform—improving efficiency, reducing costs, and extending vehicle lifetime. CR Jackson can now leverage real-time data to take a preventative approach to vehicle diagnostics, proactively spotting issues to reduce downtime.

Streamline incident investigation and improve safety
With Samsara dual-facing AI Dash Cams deployed across their light duty vehicle fleet, CR Jackson has taken driver safety to the next level. As a result of Samsara’s video-based safety solution, the back-office team can now quickly and easily retrieve footage to streamline incident investigation and driver exoneration. In the first 8 months of their deployment, CR Jackson already exonerated 3 drivers.Â
In one instance, while a driver was verifying traffic guards and signs at a road construction site, a vehicle ran through the signs at an intersection and collided with their truck. Harsh event alerts and on-demand video retrieval enabled CR Jackson to defend and exonerate their driver with the authorities at the scene.Â
Additionally, prior to Samsara, CR Jackson’s Field Safety Coordinator used to visit each job site to manually gather video evidence of the various safety precautions their team would take to ensure public safety—ranging from temporary signage to flaggers. Now with Samsara AI Dash Cams deployed across their light duty fleet, CR Jackson’s supervisors retrieve this footage remotely from the back-office. This efficient workflow demonstrates safe and compliant protocols, and ensures the CR Jackson team is taking proper measures to protect their workers and the traveling public.Â
AI Dash Cams improve driver safety and protect against false claims
Without visibility into incidents on the road, CR Jackson had no way to exonerate innocent drivers. By adopting Samsara dual-facing AI Dash Cams, they can now easily retrieve footage to streamline incident investigation. As a result, CR Jackson exonerated drivers operating light fleet equipment 3 times in the first 8 months of their deployment.
