Crafty is a leading national office food and beverage provider. Rooted in technology and hyper-obsessed with service, the company offers everything from scheduled delivery to fully managed onsite office pantry services, all in service of its mission to craft better workplaces.

Headquartered in Chicago, with offices and fulfillment centers in New York City and the Bay Area, Crafty delivers workplace food programs for leading organizations like DraftKings, Lemonade Insurance, and Ferrara as a national provider operating across multiple markets. Its high-touch model is powered by frontline teams responsible for delivery, restocking, and inventory management, who are regularly on-site interacting with employees and supporting day-to-day service. Because these team members are a visible part of the workplace experience, their consistency, engagement, and overall well-being directly impact how Crafty is experienced by clients.

Today, the company serves over 300 client offices and reaches more than 300,000 employees each month. Delivering that experience at scale depends on efficient, reliable fleet operations and a highly coordinated logistics network, ensuring every location is stocked on time and aligned to each client's needs across multiple markets, perishable inventory, and strict service expectations.

As Crafty's operations expanded—growing 800% in 2021 alone—the team recognized the need for a more robust solution to gain deeper operational visibility. "We've always prioritized driver safety, efficiency, and making informed decisions, but we didn't have tools in place to get the data we needed," said John Kreller, General Manager. "As a fast-growing startup, we had to quickly build operational systems that could grow alongside our business."

The company began searching for an advanced platform that could track vehicles in real time, deliver insights into driver behavior, and improve predictability and consistency across its office pantry services as it scaled its national delivery network.

The Solution

Before Samsara, Crafty was using a solution to track tasks like DVIR completion, but the technology had limited functionality. Crafty selected Samsara because it offered all of the tools the company needed in one platform. "Samsara checked all of the boxes for safety and coaching, fleet telematics, and temperature monitoring," said Kreller. "We also wanted a platform that offered robust reporting tools, and Samsara reports are detailed and easy to understand." Because Crafty already prioritizes simple, effective technology through its own platform, it was important to partner with a company that takes the same approach.

According to Kreller, deploying Samsara Dual-Facing AI Dash Cams, Vehicle Gateways, and Environmental Monitors was fast and easy to scale. "We started with a few trucks in Chicago, and we've been able to take what we learned and quickly outfit our trucks in other locations," he said. "As we've added new markets and new team members, the learning curve to get Samsara up and running has always been short."

Since deploying Samsara, Crafty has seen a range of benefits across its operations including significant gains in safety and efficiency. With Dual-Facing AI Dash Cams, Crafty automatically detects distracted driving behaviors such as phone usage, eating, and drowsy driving. Managers use this footage during bi-weekly one-on-one meetings to proactively coach drivers, address risky behaviors early, and reinforce a strong safety culture. With Samsara cameras and coaching tools, Crafty improved overall Safety Scores by 5% even as they continued to expand and increased their total miles driven by more than 20% in one year.

Safer driving and improved coaching also helped Crafty achieve a 33% year-over-year reduction in auto claims. "Safety is the most important thing we do, and it's where we've seen the greatest impact with Samsara," said Kreller. "Samsara gives us the visibility and data we need to proactively coach and reinforce safe driving behaviors, helping us continuously improve safety across our fleet." These improvements directly influence Crafty's ability to deliver a consistent, high quality office pantry experience. According to Kreller, safety improvements also play a key role in enhancing the employee experience and business overall. "Our drivers and on-site team members are often the face of our brand, not just delivering products, but building relationships with the teams they serve," said Kreller. "In many offices, they become familiar, trusted faces who represent Crafty day in and day out." he said. "By investing in the safety, well-being, and effectiveness of these frontline team members, we can ensure that every interaction reflects the company's standards, ultimately driving better outcomes for both clients and the business as a whole."

Because Crafty's model is high-touch, not set-it-and-forget-it, driver performance, safety, and consistency directly shape the client experience. Drivers regularly enter client spaces, restock pantries, and interact with employees throughout the day. In many cases, they also work alongside Crafty's on-site concierge teams, offering added support and insight into how service is delivered across locations.

In addition, Crafty has used Samsara Vehicle Gateways to improve routing and boost fuel efficiency. "In just three months, we saw a 4% improvement in fuel usage that's already reducing our fuel costs," said Kreller. These savings have positively impacted the company's overall miles per gallon, and according to the Samsara Benchmarking tool, Crafty now sits in the top 10% for fuel efficiency compared to peer organizations. "With Samsara's reporting, we can coach drivers on how they can make a direct impact to the business by reducing idling."

Moreover, Samsara Environmental Monitors provide real-time alerts that allow the team to react quickly to temperature fluctuations in their trucks and cold storage units. This capability directly contributed to Crafty successfully reaching their yearly product waste reduction goals. "Temperature monitoring means we can reduce product loss and stock issues, which has a direct positive impact on our fill rates," said Kreller. "When we can fulfill orders on time with the right stock, it helps us keep customers satisfied and deliver on our mission to craft better workplaces."
