The Challenge

DFW needed a single, scalable platform to unify complex fleet operations

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the second-largest airport in the U.S. by land size—spanning 27 miles, nearly the size of Manhattan—and the fourth-busiest airport in the U.S. by passenger volume. Their fleet includes more than 400 vehicles across airfield maintenance, public safety, passenger buses, rental car shuttles, emergency services, and more. Trying to manage a fleet of this scale without a unified technology platform left DFW with almost no real-time visibility into daily operations. "We didn't have a reliable way to identify where our vehicles were, who was driving them, or if they had been serviced," said Clinton Gray, Senior Risk Management Services Manager. "The lack of visibility was creating real financial and operational costs for our organization." DFW needed a single platform that went beyond simple GPS and cameras to provide comprehensive fleet management, safety, and reporting tools, along with the ability to scale across a complex, multi-department fleet.

The Solution

Innovative, easy-to-use technology for every level of operations

"We're always looking to be innovative at DFW Airport, and Samsara gave us advanced technology that's also easy to use," said Gray. "Our frontline managers, safety analysts, and executive leaders can all use Samsara to see data at a glance and quickly understand what's happening across the fleet."

DFW launched Samsara with a monitoring-only pilot that included 25 vehicles across five departments. During the pilot, they developed formal policies before activating accountability features. A year later, they went live with in-cab alerts, driver coaching, and an incentive program tied to telematics adoption and Safety Scores.

AI Dash Cams help lower fleet damage costs by 50%

With Samsara Dual-Facing AI Dash Cams, DFW was able to get full visibility into driver behavior across their fleet. As a result, DFW saw no-seatbelt events drop 87%, harsh braking fall 91%, and drowsiness events decrease 30% over the course of only a few months. Their fleet's Safety Score climbed from 70 to 99, a 29-point gain, in six months and the fleet has continued to exceed their 94% target with Safety Scores consistently in the high 90s. In addition, fleet damage costs dropped by almost 50%, from $202,102 to $101,971, driven by improved coaching that relies on video footage and incident reviews.

FLEET TELEMATICS

Real-time visibility helps optimize asset utilization and reduce idling

With Samsara Fleet Telematics, DFW gained the real-time visibility and structured reporting they needed to utilize their fleet more effectively. This visibility has enabled the organization to reduce waste by sharing underused assets across different departments. Moreover, DFW is using this same data to evaluate the lifetime usage and range of internal combustion vehicles to determine if they are suitable candidates for replacement with electric vehicles (EVs).

Connecting systems to streamline fleet maintenance and improve accountability

DFW integrates Samsara with their primary fleet management system, AssetWorks, to manage their fleet's upkeep. The integration allows managers to easily track which vehicles need service, flag upcoming inspections, or identify assets operating below performance thresholds, capabilities that save hours of mechanics' time and lower the overall cost of repairs.
