Heath recovers a $35,000 asset in under 24 hours and eliminates a $1.5M inventory visibility gap with Samsara Asset Tag
Heath overhauled asset visibility across 1,600 pieces of field equipment, recovered a $35,000 unit that would have been lost forever, and eliminated the manual tracking burden that once left $1.5M in assets unaccounted for.

The Challenge
Manual tracking left millions in field equipment invisible, unused, and vulnerable
Heath is a utility services company that contracts with major energy providers across 34 states to perform gas leak detection, meter services, and meter reading. The company's technicians operate across nearly every time zone, and each field employee carries specialized equipment in their vehicle, including custom-manufactured leak detection tools that can cost up to $100,000 per unit.
Managing that equipment with a lean back office team was nearly impossible before Samsara. Heath relied on a patchwork of manual scanning tools, proprietary apps, and spreadsheet-based workflows to track asset location and assignment. Technicians were supposed to scan equipment with barcodes each time it changed hands, but with a high turnover rate and field teams scattered across the country, adherence to this policy was inconsistent. When the company shifted from physical inventory audit to a scan-only audit to save costs, the results were alarming: $1.5 million in assets was unaccounted for—not necessarily lost, but completely invisible to the team responsible for managing them.
"Asset Tag gave us utilization visibility we never had before. We received a recent request for 30 new pieces of equipment, but thanks to Samsara, we uncovered 20 existing units that hadn't moved in 10 days. By reallocating those idle assets, the company saved $160,000 in unnecessary purchases."

The Solution
A single platform that connects equipment, vehicles, and people with no downtime
When Heath began evaluating Samsara, the initial draw was safety: a dual-facing dash cam to get visibility into driver behavior. But as the evaluation progressed, the team saw an opportunity to take the implementation beyond safety and connect every aspect of their operations on one platform.
Heath deployed Samsara Asset Tag across all field equipment valued at over $1,000, in addition to the Vehicle Gateways and AI Dash Cams already being rolled out to the rest of the fleet.
With equipment constantly changing hands and a lean back-office team, relying on manual tracking processes made it nearly impossible for Heath to accurately track which technicians had which assets. The breakthrough came when Samsara introduced asset auto-linking, a feature that Heath advocated for. When an Asset Tag is detected to be moving with a Vehicle Gateway, Samsara automatically links the two, so the system knows where the equipment is, which vehicle it is in, and which driver that vehicle is assigned to. No scanning. No manual transfers. No forms.
Heath also integrated Samsara's DVIR workflow with their internal ticketing system via API, so every defect flagged in a vehicle inspection automatically generates a service ticket. And, on the training side, Samsara Connected Training replaced weekly onboarding calls for new supervisors with on-demand audio and video modules.
Asset Tag
Eliminating a $1.5M inventory visibility gap and saving $160,000 in new equipment purchases
By deploying 1,600 Samsara Asset Tags, Heath eliminated a massive $1.5 million blind spot in unaccounted inventory. With real-time asset tracking, the fleet management team successfully recovered a $35,000 mobile unit component that was lost during shipping and avoided $160,000 in unnecessary capital expenditures by reallocating existing equipment.

Reducing total accidents by 34% and preventable accidents by 33% with personalized coaching
By deploying Samsara AI Dash Cams and tracking safety events per 1,000 miles, Heath gained unprecedented visibility into driver behavior. This objective approach to safety drove a 34% reduction in total accidents and a 33% drop in preventable accidents. Connected Training modules provide drivers with an opportunity for self-directed coaching based on their safety events, enabling managers to coach at scale.
