Hull's Environmental Services avoids an estimated $1M in potential legal exposure in just 3 months
Switching from Motive to Samsara gave Hull's Environmental Services, Inc. (HES) a foundation for a safety culture that transformed driver safety scores from 70 to 90 in under a year.

The Challenge
An increasing number of accidents led to higher insurance rates
Hull's Environmental Services provides environmental and industrial services across Florida. Their mixed fleet of roughly 180 vehicles includes heavy commercial trucks, vacuum units, roll-off trucks, and pickup trucks driven by supervisors, foremen, and managers. The company keeps crews moving across job sites that range from construction to industrial facilities. Hull's Environmental operates in some of the most demanding environments, providing services that involve hazardous materials and round-the-clock field operations, supported by trained personnel skilled in environmental response.
Previously, HES used Motive solely to track vehicles crossing state lines for tax compliance and had not implemented any in-vehicle cameras or a formal safety visibility and coaching program. "The catalyst behind partnering with Samsara was a lack of information; accidents happening and relying on different accounts of an incident affected our insurance rates," said Jamie Arleo, Safety and Technology Manager. "Video of 'what happened' is virtually indisputable."
Nobody else is innovating like Samsara. We've looked at other providers, and there's no comparison. Samsara keeps getting better. That matters when making a long-term investment.

The Solution
Switching from Motive: finding an intuitive and easy-to-use safety solution
Hull's Environmental was already using Motive for telematics, but they wanted to conduct due diligence before selecting a provider for dash cams. They received a recommendation for Samsara and evaluated several other platforms at the same time. Eventually, they ran a side-by-side trial between Samsara and Motive. From the start, they knew that ease of use was non-negotiable. Samsara won over Motive due to its intuitive design, which ensured managers and staff could easily access key features.
After selecting Samsara, Hull's Environmental deployed AI Dash Cams and Vehicle Gateways across their full fleet. From day one, usability made the difference. "For our managers, being able to get on Samsara and access what they needed quickly was a big deal," said Arleo. "Admin features, such as the ability to view another user's dashboard directly, made it easy to support staff who were less comfortable navigating the platform."
With Samsara in place, Hull's Environmental completely overhauled the driving and DOT compliance portion of their Health and Safety Program. They formed a review committee that meets regularly to evaluate safety events and determine disciplinary actions, developed a formal driving policy tied directly to Samsara safety scores, and launched a driver rewards program for those who hit a 95 or above with no events in a given month. Arleo also uses Samsara's AI Assistant to run driver performance reports in seconds and leverages geofencing to tailor safety thresholds for specific job sites where drivers are frequently in and out of vehicles throughout the day.
Samsara's continuous pace of innovation sealed Hull's confidence in their choice. "Samsara regularly releases new features," said Arleo. "Some of those other platforms are just coasting. Samsara is always improving, and that's impressive."
The Results
Avoiding $1M in estimated legal exposure with help from real-time video exoneration
Before Samsara, Hull's Environmental Services had no way to defend their drivers in the event of an accident. "A vehicle with a logo on the side is an automatic target for litigation," said Arleo. Within months of implementing Samsara's AI Dash Cams, that changed. In one serious multi-vehicle accident in Georgia, a Hull's Environmental driver was T-boned and pushed into oncoming traffic. The Samsara video, downloaded and shared with law enforcement the same day, showed clearly that their driver was not at fault. The drivers in the three other vehicles each filed lawsuits, and all three were dropped. In the months that followed, Arleo has been able to download footage during active incidents, text it to supervisors on scene, and have citations issued to the other driver on the spot. Across the incidents in the last three months alone, the company estimates that Samsara video exoneration helped it avoid roughly $1M in potential legal exposure.
Hull's review committee uses Samsara's video tools not just for accident defense, but for coaching decisions. When an event is flagged, such as a potential phone use violation, the committee downloads the surrounding minute of footage to verify what actually happened before taking any disciplinary action. This has given the team a consistent, evidence-based process for reviewing behavior and delivering feedback.
Today, the fleet's average safety score has continuously climbed and improved, with 83% of drivers scoring 90 or above. The company has now gone several months without an at-fault accident. "By eliminating at-fault accidents over the last 200 days, Samsara has paid for itself," said Arleo.
