The Challenge

Intermex Transportation needed an easy-to-use solution for compliance and safety

Intermex Transportation provides charter bus services and fixed route transportation across California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. The company's customers include the Department of Defense and school districts, as well as private customers who rely on Intermex for reliable transportation to corporate events, weddings, casinos, theme parks, and more.

Over the past several years, Intermex has steadily grown from a small operation with one bus and a few drivers to 65 employees and a fleet of 25 motor coach buses and vans. In 2018, the company faced a major obstacle to their continued operations: the federal ELD mandate. To meet the deadline, the company initially selected Geotab, but the system was difficult for the Intermex team to use. "For us, Geotab was complicated. The way it displayed hours of service was confusing and it was hard to explain to drivers," said Edgar Casillas, President. "The Geotab driver app was also unreliable. It had bugs and always crashed, which caused a lot of driver frustration."

To provide a better driver experience and mitigate any potential compliance issues, Casillas knew he needed a different solution that was easy to use and could meet the needs of the company as it continued to grow.

Solution

Samsara provides one platform for ELD, safety, maintenance, and more

Intermex needed a new solution fast, and Casillas quickly decided on Samsara. "I chose Samsara because it offered cameras, ELD, and everything we needed in one solution," he said. "We don’t have to deal with multiple vendors for different technologies, which makes Samsara much easier to manage."

Intermex now uses several Samsara products to manage safety and compliance across their fleet, including Samsara Vehicle Gateways (VGs), which enable the company to meet ELD compliance requirements. VGs also help the company proactively manage maintenance, monitoring critical vehicle information, such as engine temperature, RPMs, and outside temperature. If an engine begins to overheat, all maintenance staff automatically receive a text message with a fault code, and drivers are instructed to pull over to a safe location as soon as they can. "Even with a few minutes of warning, these alerts help prevent engines from shutting off in the middle of the highway," Casillas said. "Samsara has prevented many vehicle breakdowns, which can cost a significant amount of time and money."

In addition, Intermex deployed AI Dash Cams to reduce risky driving behaviors, particularly distracted driving related to cell phone use. "Samsara Dash Cams detect when a driver picks up their phone, and sends an automatic nudge to remind them to put it down and focus on the road," said Casillas. The company also implemented AI Multicam to defend against insurance claims. "With Samsara, we've been able to make significant progress in making drivers aware of risky behaviors and reducing them."

The company also uses Environmental Monitors to ensure comfortable, temperature-controlled rides for customers, as well as Asset Tag to track valuable assets, including service laptops and, most importantly, company cars. "We operate three yards, and before Asset Tag, we didn't know where our cars were located," Casillas says. "Now, instead of needing to call multiple people to ask which yard has a particular car, we can check Samsara, find it within seconds, and send a driver to pick it up."

Results

Safer drivers and more efficient operations to support company growth

After switching to Samsara, Intermex has experienced improvements across their operations, including improved on-the-road safety. The company has lowered speeding by 39% and reduced collision risk by 14% in one year. Implementing AI Dash Cams also improved the culture of safety at Intermex. "When we rolled out Samsara, some drivers chose to leave because they weren't willing to commit to driving more safely," Casillas said. "We are confident that our drivers are committed to being here and fully understand why safety is a top priority for our company."

In addition, the ability to access data through the Samsara dashboard has provided substantial time savings. Before Samsara, the Intermex team had to wait to download video from their side cameras until a bus returned to the yard, which could take weeks. Now, the safety team can access AI Multicam footage immediately, significantly lowering investigation time and allowing the team to resolve incidents much faster. “Our buses are 45-feet long, and other drivers can get too close and damage them despite the fact that our employees are driving safely,” Casillas said. “We haven’t had an insurance claim this year due to the all-around visibility we get with AI Multicam.”

Samsara's capabilities also help Intermex attract and retain customers. The ability to Live Share vehicle tracking links has been a key feature for the company's clients, particularly the Department of Defense and schools. "Our customers love working with us because they can simply click a link to track their vehicle in real time—no more calling dispatch every 10 minutes," said Casillas. "It not only saves everyone time, but enables us to deliver a higher standard of customer care and professionalism."
