The Challenge
Limited visibility and manual processes created reactive fleet operations
Market Express is a Pacific Northwest trucking company that has grown from a handful of trucks to more than 300 tractors and 900 trailers. The company specializes in dry van, reefer, and heavy-haul freight for paper manufacturers, consumer packaged goods companies, and food and beverage shippers.
Previously, every team at Market Express had their own manual system. "Before Samsara, we used spreadsheets to track accidents and incidents. We didn't have any video. It was a lot of guesswork," said Denise Rugh, Director of Safety. When safety events were reported by their legacy telematics system, managers manually followed up with drivers about what happened. Meanwhile, trailers were tracked through a TMS that only updated at 15-minute intervals or by calling drivers directly. On the maintenance side, repairs were reactive, often occurring only after a breakdown.
Culminating these visibility challenges, Market Express had a trailer utilization problem. They knew their trailers were sitting idle for weeks—whether in a yard or at a customer site—but had no way to verify location or load status. "Any piece of equipment sitting idle, especially empty, is equipment that we're paying for," said James Trendell, Director of Strategy and Execution. "Whether it's maintenance or leasing costs, we're putting money into equipment that's not generating revenue."
Samsara has been a game changer for our operation. One, our drivers are happier—they're not getting run all over town looking for trailers. Two, they're much more efficient, which generates more revenue and allows us to grow that much faster.

The Solution
A consolidated, intuitive platform to unite operations and drive efficiency
Market Express chose Samsara to modernize and consolidate their operations. "From the start, Samsara's out-of-the-box technology solved a lot of our challenges," said Rugh. "As we've grown, Samsara has innovated alongside us." They deployed Vehicle Gateways, AI Dash Cams, Asset Gateways, and Cargo Monitors, enabling Market Express to gain instant visibility across their vehicles and trailers.
During the ramp-up period, Samsara's ease of use accelerated onboarding. "Everything's in one view. It's really intuitive," said Trendell. "It's extremely valuable for our operation to see everything in one clean dashboard—and it doesn't take a lot of training." For the first time, the safety team could see video alongside reported events, operations could locate any truck or trailer in seconds, and maintenance surfaced fault codes before trucks came in for service. Most importantly, with Dormancy Reports and Cargo Monitors, Market Express could systematically identify and recover idle trailers.
"For the most part, every trucking company moves freight the same way. The difference that sets a company apart are two things, the people and the technology. With Samsara, we are able to check that technology box,” said Trendell.
Trailer Tracking
Cutting idle trailers by 60% with Samsara's Smart Trailers solution, including Cargo Monitors
By combining Asset Gateways with Cargo Monitors, Market Express reduced trailers sitting idle for 14 or more days by 60%. They transitioned from fully manual yard searches to locating any trailer in seconds using Asset Gateways that provide consistent, real-time visibility. By layering on Cargo Monitors, the team can verify load status with infrared technology to get empty trailers back sooner and loaded trailers unloaded. Getting a trailer back into circulation even a day faster means an immediate opportunity to bill for a new load. As Market Express has grown, improved trailer utilization has enabled the team to take on additional freight volume without proportionally growing their trailer fleet.

Fleet Telematics
30% more shop throughput by catching faults early and planning repairs in advance
With real-time fault code visibility across the fleet with diagnostic data from Vehicle and Asset Gateways, Market Express's maintenance shop processes approximately 30% more vehicles and trailers with the same resources. The shop diagnoses problems, orders parts, and stages repairs before units ever arrive. Trailer ABS monitoring gives maintenance and managers a shared view of trailer brake health so teams can decide what needs immediate attention versus what can wait. Emergency repair calls that can cost anywhere from $500 to $2,500 each are increasingly caught before they happen.

Reducing speeding by 77% and improving FMCSA scores with Samsara's Safety Solution
Market Express has seen a 77% reduction in speeding events since deploying Samsara AI Dash Cams, driven by real-time, in-cab alerts that prompt drivers to correct behavior before an incident occurs. If follow up coaching is needed, Automated Coaching automatically sends drivers relevant training content for self-guided coaching. When crashes do happen, video evidence provides the full context for every event, eliminating guesswork. In seven events, Market Express submitted Samsara footage to the FMCSA's crash data queue, receiving a non-preventable ruling every single time, directly protecting the company's crash indicator score and shipper relationships.
