THE CHALLENGE

Fragmented systems and rural connectivity gaps left Sapp Bros. without visibility when it mattered most

Sapp Bros. operates 18 full-service travel centers along Interstate 80, stretching from Utah to Pennsylvania. In addition to this retail footprint, they run a robust wholesale petroleum and transportation logistics division that delivers fuel, lubricants, and other essential business supplies across multiple states. With more than 1,500 employees and roughly 600 assets—including commercial trucks, trailers, pickups, and forklifts—hauling high-stakes loads like gasoline, diesel, and oil means even a single blind spot carries real regulatory and legal risk. "When you're hauling hazardous loads of fuel down the road, having visibility into all those safety incidents is very important," said Randy Benson, Director of Fleets and Assets at Sapp Bros.

Before Samsara, Sapp Bros. managed its fleet compliance and safety programs using fragmented systems from separate vendors, including one for electronic logging device (ELD) compliance and Lytx for forward and driver-facing dash cams. This multi-vendor approach introduced operational friction, leaving the administrative team bouncing between separate software portals to track down basic compliance, safety, and routing information. Operating across extensive rural areas presented significant technical and operational hurdles, as cellular connection dropouts were frequent. Under their previous vendor setup, these communication gaps routinely resulted in lost data and signal failures. When critical driving incidents occurred, safety managers were often unable to retrieve footage or review coachable moments because the data simply did not transmit. The breaking point came during a severe highway accident where a Sapp Bros. truck was totaled, and Sapp Bros. said Lytx failed to preserve any footage, highlighting the vulnerability of its safety technology. Sapp Bros. went looking for an all-in-one platform that would consolidate everything in one view, hold up in remote areas, and scale as their organization continued to grow.

The Solution

Consolidating compliance, safety, and asset tracking onto one platform built to scale

Sapp Bros. turned to Samsara to replace fragmented vendors and unreliable rural coverage with one connected platform that could scale across the entire operation. "We were looking for an all-in-one solution and a partner that would grow with us," said Benson. The deployment spans Samsara Vehicle Gateways for ELD compliance, AI Dash Cams for safety, and Asset Tags for unpowered equipment—consolidating compliance, safety, and asset tracking into a single source of truth.

To avoid the installation problems of past deployments, Sapp Bros handled the hardware rollout themselves. Their own maintenance technicians installed vehicle gateways and dash cams across the multi-state network, finding the hardware intuitive enough to plug in and mount without written instructions—keeping quality control in-house and downtime to a minimum. What began as a replacement for two vendors has grown into a fleet-wide standard where operational decisions are based on data instead of assumptions.
