The Challenge

Three disconnected platforms couldn't deliver the equipment health, billing accuracy, or driver safety visibility that a growing operation required

Saunders Construction is a construction manager/general contractor operating across the Rocky Mountain region, serving sectors that include healthcare, higher education, data centers, hospitality, and government facilities. With 78 vehicles and heavy equipment deployed across job sites that can span three to four hours apart, the operations team was running three separate solutions—Verizon for fleet tracking, TrackUnit for equipment management, and a standalone rental program for billing—and as the work program grew, the limitations of each became increasingly clear.

A previous telematics solution provided GPS location but no equipment health data, making remote diagnostics impossible and turning routine maintenance issues into multi-trip, multi-hour service calls across the state. Asset movement alerts weren't something the solution could deliver, leaving the team with limited visibility when equipment left a job site unexpectedly. Equipment billing frequently lagged due to the manual process of requiring mechanics to travel to jobsites to verify equipment hours before invoices could be generated and submitted. This created delays in billing cycles and slowed revenue recognition. And with only speed and harsh braking numbers from Verizon, the safety department was limited and had no video context.

The Solution

A single connected platform eliminates blind spots, cuts field service time in half, and turns driver safety data into real coaching

Saunders Construction replaced several solutions with a single Samsara deployment across their vehicle fleet and equipment inventory. The Samsara implementation took half the time it previously did with other vendors, and the team began realizing ROI from Samsara within months of deployment.

"The ease of installation, the customer support, and the amount of time that gets saved when we deploy any Samsara technology is tremendous," Cris Lance, Director of Equipment & Warehouse Operations said. "Samsara is constantly improving their platform to better fit our needs, and it makes our day-to-day operations more efficient and effective."

Asset Tag

Protecting equipment worth $250,000+ per unit while eliminating theft risk for portable assets

Saunders Construction uses Samsara Asset Tag to track high-value portable equipment, including laser levels, transit setups, and scissor lifts, across job sites throughout Colorado and Wyoming. Each tagged item represents a minimum value of at least $2,000, while larger equipment such as telehandlers start at $250,000 per unit. With assets distributed across long-duration job sites (many lasting one to two years), knowing where every piece of equipment is at all times is critical to both security and cost control.

Maintenance

Cutting field diagnostic time by 50% and work order processing time by 95% with remote fault codes and AI invoice upload

Before Samsara, Saunders Construction spent approximately 25 hours per week traveling to job sites to diagnose equipment issues in person, often making multiple trips to the same location once the right parts were identified. With Samsara Connected Maintenance, the team can now pull fault codes remotely before leaving the shop, arrive on-site prepared, and resolve the issue in a single visit, and as a result, field diagnostic and service travel time has been cut by 50% and AI invoice upload results in 95% faster work order entry. The downstream impact was even more significant: the efficiency gains from remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance alerts allowed Saunders Construction to reduce maintenance labor requirements by 75% while maintaining service quality.

Cameras & Video

83% of coaching handled through driver self-review within two years of first-ever dash cam deployment

Saunders Construction had no dash cams before Samsara—and no structured driver coaching program. Due to the basic features of their previous provider, Verizon Connect, Saunders Construction had no video context to distinguish a risky driver from a one-time lapse. In the two years since deploying Samsara AI Dash Cams, Saunders Construction's safety team has transformed how it identifies, coaches, and recognizes drivers. Speeding decreased 61%, heavy speeding decreased 77%, and harsh braking decreased 48%. 83% of coaching is now handled through driver self-review, meaning most behavior improvement happens before a safety manager ever gets involved.

Fleet Telematics

Real-time equipment hour tracking eliminates billing errors and improves job cost accuracy

Before Samsara, Saunders Construction's integration between a previous telematics provider and their rental management program was supposed to sync equipment hours in real time, but it often didn't. With Samsara Fleet Telematics, equipment hours are now captured accurately and visible in real time. The accounting team has immediate access to reliable usage data, eliminating the need for manual hour verification and enabling invoices to be generated and submitted on time, every time. This has streamlined the billing process, improved operational efficiency, and accelerated revenue collection.
