The Challenge

TP Trucking needed to consolidate the devices and point solutions their drivers relied on every day

TP Trucking & Logistics is an over-the-road carrier specializing in flatbed hauling of lumber, pipe, and timber mill products with a fleet of 114 trucks, 165 trailers, and a specialized maxi fleet of four-axle tractors and 50 pup trailers operating out of two terminals.

Before Samsara, the company relied on several point solutions: Omnitracs with Qualcomm for electronic logging, SmartDrive for dash cams, and a mix of consumer GPS apps and personal Garmin units for navigation. Drivers juggled up to three separate devices and apps on every run—a tablet for ELD, a GPS unit or app, and fuel apps—creating distractions and operational inefficiencies. Safety coaching was manual and reactive due to video footage that was difficult to access. Without trailer tracking in place, it could take up to 30 minutes of phone calls and yard walks to locate a single trailer. Finally, without a standardized navigation solution, drivers were routinely sent over weight-restricted bridges and onto non-commercial roads, leading to out-of-route miles, service delays, citation risks, and a bridge strike.

After dealing with legacy technology for so long, Samsara was eye-opening. Consolidating vendors has simplified everything: less admin work, better data, and clearer visibility.

The Solution

A unified platform built for drivers and the back office

TP Trucking evaluated several providers before selecting Samsara for its ability to replace multiple point solutions with a single integrated platform that connects with their transportation management system (TMS) and maintenance software. Samsara also stood out for its product roadmap: truck-safe navigation, in-app document scanning, and a rapidly expanding set of capabilities gave the team confidence they were making the right long-term investment. Implementation was extremely smooth—installs ran about 40 minutes per vehicle, with the fleet fully deployed in less than five months. The company rolled out Samsara's ELD solution and Commercial Navigation, AI Dash Cams with Camera Connector for side-view cameras, and Smart Trailers across their fleet.

Managing safe, compliant navigation across a flatbed fleet is a constant challenge—weight limits, bridge clearances, and non-truck routes create real exposure when drivers rely on consumer navigation. With Samsara Commercial Navigation, TP Trucking's drivers now get truck-safe routing with Hours of Service (HOS) visible on the same screen, reducing the devices they need to manage on the road. In a 90-day period, they avoided 180 commercial-restricted roads, including 10 low bridges and 82 weight-limited roads, across more than 160,000 miles. As a result of standardizing navigation, TP Trucking cut out-of-route miles and delays caused by drivers getting lost, ultimately reducing service failures by 90%.

Workforce Management

A proactive safety culture built on data and reinforced with recognition

Previously, reviewing safety events and coaching drivers was a manual, full-time effort. To reduce this burden, TP Trucking implemented Automated Coaching, using behavioral thresholds to route the right driver to the right outcome. Now, most drivers receive real-time feedback through In-Cab Nudges and training videos, escalating only high-priority events to manager-led coaching. This saves supervisor time and focuses their attention on the drivers who need it most. As a result, risky behaviors have steadily declined, and a large portion of the fleet sits above their Safety Score target. Paired with Recognition tools, such as Kudos and a fleet-wide "Safety Score Showdown" Competition, TP Trucking has transformed how drivers experience safety.

Eliminating time-consuming yard hunts with real-time trailer visibility

With 165 trailers spread across two terminals, TP Trucking used to rely on their TMS for last-known dispatch data, calls to drivers, and yard walks to locate equipment that could run up to 30 minutes per trailer. Samsara Smart Trailers eliminated that search time with live tracking visible to both dispatch and drivers in the Samsara Driver App, and added ABS and engine fault monitoring that helps managers make faster, smarter maintenance decisions.
