Meet Turnpoint Services

60 ACQUIRED BRANDS
32 STATES

The Challenge

60 acquired brands without a consolidated standard for keeping technicians safe

Turnpoint Services is a private equity–backed home services platform made up of HVAC and plumbing companies across the country. The company has brought roughly 60 brands into the fold, generating about $1.5 billion in revenue across 32 states. "When you acquire 60 companies, everyone has their own success formula," said Kyle Helton, Vice President of EHS and Risk. "Our job is getting everyone aligned." With technicians navigating both rural and metro areas, the risk that mattered most was the one on the road: distracted driving, drowsy driving, and heavy traffic.

Because each brand had been running its own playbook successfully for years, risk was managed brand by brand—each with its own insurance policy, its own carrier, and its own broker. About a quarter of brands had a telematics platform in place, and those that did ran a mix of different systems, so there was no standardized safety policy or camera footage to protect employees. Standing up a national risk program meant first being able to see the whole fleet at once. "When we started looking at our losses in aggregate, it was pretty clear that vehicle accidents were our biggest exposure," said Helton. "But with every brand on a different carrier, we couldn’t see the total fleet and associated costs. We needed everyone on the same platform, operating consistently."

The Solution

A phased, operator-led rollout had brands asking to move up in line

Turnpoint evaluated several telematics platforms and selected Samsara. With fleet management centralized, they were able to build a national risk program and a single standard for every brand. Rolling it out was a deliberate exercise in change management. The original plan phased installations over 18 months, methodically installing dash cams brand by brand. Cameras started outward-facing only, and the case for them came from inside each brand rather than from corporate: local leaders shared footage from near-misses and exonerations with their own teams. "The worst thing you can do is push an initiative by saying corporate is telling you to do this," said Helton. "When it comes from peer to peer, it lands differently." The approach worked so well that brands started asking to be moved up in the installation queue, compressing the full fleet-wide rollout to under a year.

Today, Samsara AI Dash Cams are installed fleetwide, with in-cab alerts for speeding as the first initiative. "Samsara showed us exactly where to focus," said Mike Friez, Director of EHS. "We buckled down on heavy and severe speeding, communicated it out, and we had results almost right away." In the Samsara Driver App, technicians see their own safety data, complete self-coaching, and finish assigned training from their mobile device. More recently, the brands with the highest-risk drivers have added Coaching Priority. "Samsara's Coaching Priority puts our riskiest drivers at the top of the list, so coaching goes where it counts," said Friez.

The Results

Fewer risky behaviors on the road and 45% lower accident claim costs

The clearest measure of the program's impact shows up on the balance sheet. Across dash cam–equipped fleets, Turnpoint saw a 45% reduction in accident claim costs over 12 months compared to fleets without dual-facing cameras. For the first time, the company can also see its total loss picture in one place—and use it. "Our narrative with insurers has changed," said Helton. "Three years ago, they just wanted to see that you had a telematics platform. Now, they want to know how we’re using dash cams to drive down our losses. Samsara gives us the insight and the tools to answer that."

What made the program land was the benefit to technicians. Today, they proactively report potential safety events. "Employees will call in when they see something and say, 'check on my video,'" said Friez, "They know Samsara is there for their protection too." With technicians bought in, in-cab alerts enabled instant self-correction, and the results compounded quickly. In a six-month span, Turnpoint cut severe speeding events by 47%, rolling stops by 31%, distracted driving events by 30%, drowsy driving by 27%, and more.

Turnpoint also layered recognition into the program. The company now awards safest driver, safest driving brand, top drivers, and top coaches every quarter, publishes a weekly leaderboard, and some brands post safety scores in their shops. During its dual-facing camera pilot, Turnpoint ran a Competition through the Samsara Driver App with cash prizes. Brands competed on two things: training completion rate and number of distracted driving events. Training completions jumped 250%, and distracted driving events fell sharply within 30 days. "With Samsara Competitions, the reward is part of it, but what really drives success is technicians seeing their name on the list," said Friez. "I send the leaderboard out weekly and get about 10 questions each time asking what they can do to improve, which is exactly what we wanted to happen."

The effect reaches past the fleet entirely. "I don't drive a company vehicle, but seeing the data day in and day out has changed the way I drive," said Helton. "So many people say the same thing. Samsara has legs beyond your immediate fleet—there are benefits inside the workplace and outside of it."
