The Challenge
High insurance claims and limited driver visibility hindered fleet expansion
Before adopting Samsara, Utility Supply & Construction Company (USCCO) relied on legacy GPS telematics but lacked dash cam visibility, which meant they had no way to monitor how their vehicles were being driven. This lack of insight resulted in damaged vehicles returned to the yard without explanation, incidents accumulated with no footage for review, and reactive coaching. The resulting lack of visibility led to significant, avoidable costs. Additionally, USCCO faced the critical task of rolling out new dash cam technology in a way that earned the trust and support of their primarily unionized workforce.
"Auto incidents are like dominoes. That single event has the potential to trigger multiple claims behind it: auto, property damage to third parties, workers' comp, bodily injury, etc. If that first domino doesn't fall, then we're not just reducing auto claims, we're shrinking the entire ecosystem of downstream exposure that follows. Samsara allows us to be extremely proactive in preventing that initial domino from falling."

The Solution
A trust-first deployment improves safety and earns union endorsement
USCCO partnered with Samsara on a deliberate rollout of safety technology. 1,200+ vehicles were equipped with Samsara AI Dash Cams in-house, saving over $300,000. Then, once drivers had bought in, USCCO removed dash cam covers and established a single safety reviewer for consistent, proactive coaching. This transparent, single-reviewer coaching workflow fostered a significant cultural shift. In a high-turnover, primarily unionized workforce, USCCO moved from driver skepticism to active endorsement from union leadership, with drivers becoming advocates after the cameras exonerated them in incidents.
"At the end of the day, it's all about making sure our drivers, our family, get home safe," said Melissa Lattimore, Safety & Training Manager. "That's what matters most, and that's why we put such a huge focus on being proactive with our safety program."

Crash Alerts and Weather Intelligence keep crews safe during the most dangerous deployments
During a major Midwest ice storm, Samsara alerted USCCO to a significant crash at 3 a.m. Using Samsara technology, USCCO's safety team responded within 10 minutes, confirming the driver's status and coordinating a response. Samsara's real-time Crash Alerts and GPS data, dispatched automatically to a designated safety and operations group text thread, provide USCCO's storm response teams the situational awareness they need when conditions are most dangerous and communication is most critical. Weather Intelligence also gives storm crews ground-level road condition visibility from Samsara's camera network before they even arrive in an affected area.

Recovering $535K in stolen equipment and helping law enforcement bust a multi-state theft ring
Since USCCO deployed Samsara GPS devices across high-value equipment, at least $535,000 worth of stolen or lost equipment has been successfully recovered using Samsara GPS data. One recovery even led law enforcement to a large multi-state theft ring operating across the Midwest. With Samsara Asset Tags, USCCO unlocked uninterrupted visibility into their assets, even in areas of spotty or unreliable connectivity.
