The Challenge

Werner needed safety technology robust enough to change driver behavior and earn their trust

Werner is a $3 billion truckload transportation and logistics company that has operated across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico for over 70 years. Today, the company drives roughly three million miles a day, powered by a team of around 10,000 drivers ranging from first-time CDL holders to veterans with more than 5 million accident-free miles.

Before working with Samsara, Werner had already built an in-cab technology stack, including dash cams and a third-party weather alert provider. The legacy camera system captured only certain events in short clips, leaving safety teams without the context to coach drivers or recognize safe choices on the road. The technology was also unreliable, breaking down as often as every two weeks, and leaving operators with late-night support calls alongside data that lagged two days behind. And because the weather system relied on National Weather Service text message alerts with no visual proof of conditions, drivers often dismissed warnings that didn't match what they saw from the cab.

The Solution

A single platform to deploy safety technology at scale, faster

Over the last four years, Werner moved from a handful of cameras to full fleet implementation of Samsara, standardizing on AI Dash Cams and, more recently, AI Multicam. "Samsara's been a partner of ours for quite a while now. What really got us moving was the forward-facing AI Dash Cam. It provided a lot of value for our drivers—both in helping them improve and giving us clearer visibility into accidents," said Ben Murphy, Vice President of Equipment and Maintenance.

Deploying that technology across a fleet that adds 2,500 new trucks a year created a scale problem of its own. Rather than have technicians install cameras, which consumed up to a full day per unit and competed with repair time, Werner worked with their OEMs to leverage Samsara's Pre-Delivery Installation program. New trucks now arrive with Samsara cameras and Vehicle Gateways already installed and configured to Werner's specifications, accelerating coverage without pulling technicians off repair work. "Having Samsara pre-installed on new trucks freed up our technicians," said Murphy. "A truck that rolls in this morning could be ready for the road the same day—that wouldn't be possible if we had to do installations ourselves."

Werner also co-develops solutions with Samsara through a road team of drivers who pilot the new technology, such as Weather Intelligence, and provide feedback before anything reaches the wider fleet or Samsara customer base. "The partnership with Samsara has been highly collaborative," said Tristan Nolan, Senior Product Manager. "Not only do we have a seat at the table, but our teams can work on the critical systems our users are active in every day."

Cameras & Video

Reducing sideswipe events by 45% during a pilot of AI Multicam

Since implementing Samsara AI Dash Cams, Werner experienced safety improvements across the board, notably bringing down their accident rate by 22% and achieving a 19-year low in DOT reportable accidents in 2023. Driver exonerations and positive recognition fueled buy-in of the technology, leading Werner to expand camera coverage around the vehicle with AI Multicam. "During our AI Multicam trial, we saw a 45% reduction in sideswipe events. In a world where you're happy with a 5% return, seeing a 45% reduction is a phenomenal testament to the technology," said Cassidy. "But ultimately, these are lives we're protecting on America's roadways."

Preventing storm-related accidents with Weather Intelligence

Werner replaced ineffective, text-based weather alerts with Samsara's AI-powered Weather Intelligence, co-developing StreetSense, a solution that uses real-time dash cam images from across the network to deliver accurate, visual insights to drivers. After a fleet-wide rollout before it was fully completed, the system proved critical during Winter Storm Fern, which impacted 60% of Werner's fleet. Drivers made safer decisions with trusted, real-time alerts, helping avoid a post-storm spike in accidents. The solution also became a customer asset, providing live visibility into conditions across Werner's network.
