The Challenge
Overcoming data overload and disconnected systems
CFC Recycling and its logistics arm, CFC Transport, operate out of Middle Tennessee, providing industrial metal recycling and transportation services across the region. With a fleet of more than 20 trucks and 15 drivers, they manage the complex logistics of placing containers for recyclable materials, hauling these containers to their facilities to be processed, and transporting the processed recyclable materials to a mill to be remelted into new products.
Before partnering with Samsara, CFC Recycling struggled to find a technology partner that could deliver the data and dash cam footage they needed in an easy-to-use platform. CFC Recycling cycled through several providers, including Big Road, Verizon Connect, and Geotab, but faced significant operational hurdles with each; these previous systems provided an overwhelming volume of disorganized data, making it difficult to trust the information or use it effectively. This disorganization ultimately impacted drivers by making it more difficult to quickly exonerate them in not-at-fault incidents. For back office staff, incident investigation was challenging; their previous systems often failed to capture critical events, and video retrieval was time-consuming.
"Data is useless unless it's good, organized data. With Geotab and Verizon, I couldn't trust the data given to me. With Samsara, I have access to accurate, reliable, real-time information that I can instantly put to use for my drivers and my operations."

The Solution
A driver-friendly platform for safety and visibility
CFC Recycling partnered with Samsara to simplify their operations and gain reliable visibility into their fleet. They rolled out the Samsara Connected Operations Platform, including telematics, AI Dash Cams, AI Multicams, and the Samsara Driver App (Top rated on Apple and Google app) to improve safety and compliance. Samsara's intuitive interface reduced the learning curve for drivers who found previous systems cumbersome and difficult to use.
Cameras & Video
Exonerating drivers and supporting the defense against litigation
With Samsara AI Dash Cams, CFC Recycling now has the evidence needed to support the exoneration of drivers immediately following critical incidents. In one serious incident, Samsara telematics and video evidence proved the CFC Recycling driver was traveling at the speed limit and had less than three seconds to react to an out-of-control vehicle. This clear evidence allowed the driver to be cleared at the scene by law enforcement, helping to avoid vehicle impoundment and mitigating the risk of costly litigation.
"Dash cam footage and telematics data from Samsara proved that there was absolutely nothing our driver could have done differently to avoid the incident," said Rice. "Within 30 minutes of the police officer being on the scene and reviewing the evidence, the truck and our driver were released."

Building customer trust through real-time transparency
CFC Recycling uses Samsara's real-time GPS tracking to enhance customer service and combat the industry reputation for delayed arrivals. By using live share links, the CFC Recycling team provides customers with accurate ETAs, offering peace of mind when shipments are critical. This transparency allows customers to see exactly where a truck is, eliminating doubts about delays caused by traffic or unforeseen circumstances.
"The transportation industry has a bad rap for telling customers a driver is 'right down the road' when the driver might still be hours away," said Rice. "Now, when we share a live link with a customer, they can track the delivery themselves—in real time. It helps everyone feel like their time is being valued."

Workforce Management
Simplifying the driver experience to enable self-coaching
CFC Recycling needed a mobile app that was simple and intuitive for their drivers. Previous providers like Geotab proved cumbersome, requiring drivers to physically bring tablets into the office for troubleshooting. "Geotab was not intuitive for our drivers. Samsara has filled the gap between the capability we need and ease of use our drivers need," said Rice. "Now I can spend the time I used to spend troubleshooting software on coaching our drivers."

Samsara Platform
Unifying maintenance workflows with reliable data
To proactively manage fleet health, CFC Recycling uses an API integration between Samsara and Whip Around for driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs) and maintenance tracking. With Geotab, integrations were often clunky and difficult to connect, resulting in a flood of false fault codes that overwhelmed CFC mechanics. The Samsara platform solved this by pushing accurate, clean odometer readings and defects directly to the maintenance team, enabling them to trust the data they see and address issues promptly.
