Data silos and a lack of real-time data made it difficult to manage complex operations efficiently
Ferrellgas is a leading distributor of propane and related equipment to residential, industrial, and agricultural customers across all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Their operations include Blue Rhino, the nation's largest propane tank exchange brand, and Ferrell North America, which manages the nationwide transport and purchase of propane.
The company's operations are complex, involving different vehicle types that often make deliveries across a wide range of roads, from steep roadways with heavy snow and ice to those that are muddy and unpaved. To provide a high level of service to their customers, the Ferrellgas team realized they needed to improve data accuracy and visibility across their operations. "We had technology in place, but we were operating in silos with those systems," said Megan Sharp, Vice President of Operations Support. "We were not able to make the data meaningful, and were missing critical ways to improve our business."
Sharp and her team knew they needed a technology provider that could not only provide accurate data and integrate key systems, but one that could also support their technology-forward culture.

Samsara provides an open platform and critical implementation support
Before selecting a partner, Sharp and her team developed a detailed telematics roadmap that included capabilities the company would need across several related areas, such as safety, compliance, and sustainability. They selected Samsara based on the platform's ability to deliver real-time data and insights across these areas, as well as Samsara's robust APIs and ease of customization.
Sharp also pointed to Samsara's support during the implementation process as a key differentiator. "We knew what we wanted the end state to look like, but there were a lot of questions about how it was going to work," Sharp said. "Samsara was with us every step of the way and recommended what we needed to do to stay on track and be successful."
With this approach, Ferrellgas was able to install Samsara across 90% of their fleet in just over 90 days, beating their target goal by a full month.
Real-time insights to improve safety and save 10% on fuel
Before Samsara, a lack of accurate telematics data was one of the biggest challenges facing the Ferrellgas team. With Samsara Vehicle Gateways, the company has been able to get real-time data to improve decision making and achieve a range of operational improvements. These include improving safety by reducing harsh events and speeding events by 5%, as well as boosting driver engagement. In addition, Ferrellgas has been able to significantly improve their fuel management. With Samsara, the company created an Idling Strategic Initiative and has used the Idling Report to improve driver efficiency scores by 33%, which led to 10% savings on fuel in the first year alone.

Ferrellgas improves driver trip assignments and other key processes
With Samsara, Ferrellgas has improved other processes as well, including making driver trip assignments more accurate, a key part of their business that helps improve driver safety. "We worked with Samsara to develop accurate measures of trip assignment and created customized reporting to understand our unique employee logins," Sharp said. "We were able to improve our driver logins by 80% in one year."
The Ferrellgas team also uses Samara to streamline communications with drivers in the field. The company consolidated five separate channels into one using the Samsara Driver App to message drivers and collect feedback more efficiently. In addition, Ferrellgas uses the App to get important information to drivers, including routine safety reminders and company updates.

Connecting disparate systems for greater efficiency
As a technology-focused company, Ferrellgas has invested in a variety of solutions to manage various aspects of their business. However, many of these systems were not connected, which made it difficult to get meaningful data-driven insights.
