The Challenge

Missing safety footage and unexplained technical failures undermine trust

As a trusted, 100-year-old fuel and lubricant supplier with seven bulk distribution centers, a chain of twenty-two convenience stores, and a transport fleet of seventy-five trucks, Gaubert Oil delivers high-quality products and services across the industrial, oil and gas, petrochemical, and refining markets.

Gaubert Oil often makes deliveries on rural roads where drivers must contend with poor communications service areas and other hazards that make safety even more critical to their operations. Before Samsara, the company was experiencing significant reliability issues with their previous safety solution.

Incidents include unexplained technical issues. "One time, all of our permissions just vanished, which was highly concerning," said Chris Phillips, IT Manager. "They were recovered, but our vendor couldn't tell us why the issue had happened."

The company also experienced problems getting help from customer support in general. "If a problem came up, we would sometimes have to go a week or two before we'd have any kind of solution to the problem," Phillips said. "It was far too slow for the pace of our operations."

Their previous provider was also creating inefficiencies due to a lack of integration with critical third-party software, including the provider's dispatching solution. "We use TMW to do dispatch for our transport loads, and our previous solution only had a beta integration," Phillips said. "Samsara provides seamless integration with the tool that makes us more efficient."

The Solution

Robust support, reliability, and seamless integration capabilities

Gaubert Oil chose Samsara based on their robust support, reliability, and existing integration capabilities. IT analyst Scott Webre was able to complete the deployment in about six weeks. "Installing Samsara and setting up the system was very simple and plug-and-play," Webre said. "I was able to get the devices into four or five trucks a day."

With Samsara, the provider also gets far faster, and customized support. "Samsara will typically respond to our support requests in less than a day," said Phillips "We also worked with support staff to create a custom process to manage fuel receipt forms to make purchasing data easier to manage. The quick, individualized support we get with Samsara is impressive."

The Results

A single platform to streamline workflows and increase efficiency

Since deploying Samsara, Gaubert Oil has experienced significant improvements in reliability and operational efficiency. For example, they can now retrieve video footage of incidents quickly. "We can get video after an incident, often within a few minutes, even if a camera is damaged," said Phillips. "It's very simple and we feel confident that the footage will be there if we need it."

In addition, the company's ability to seamlessly integrate third-party software with Samsara has streamlined their workflows. "With Samsara, our teams can interact with one consolidated solution, instead of needing to use separate dispatch and ELD tools," said Phillips. "Samsara gives us much more flexibility to implement tools and use them in a way that's best for our business."

They have also used Samsara Assistant to work more efficiently. "I've used Samsara Assistant for specific reports, like creating a list of our trucks by year, make, and model, as well as to highlight everything the platform can do in general," Webre said. "Samsara Assistant finds what I need very quickly and is extremely helpful."

Overall, Gaubert Oil has been able to minimize daily operational issues and use their time more effectively. As Phillips said: "Using Samsara means we have far fewer day-to-day headaches across our operations and can focus on what moves our business forward — providing more quality products and excellent service to our customers."
