The Challenge
Unreliable tracking slowed emergency response
Lodging Solutions, a subsidiary of Bolton Holdings, serves as a critical lifeline during disaster recovery operations by providing temporary workforce accommodations and industrial tent systems that enable emergency teams to carry out life-saving missions.
Before Samsara, Lodging Solutions struggled with a previous provider that couldn't keep up with the trailer and asset tracking needed for their operations. Hardware failures were common, batteries drained unexpectedly on idle assets, and operations teams were left chasing device issues instead of preparing for storms.
Visibility gaps also created real operational risk. Location updates could lag by 15 minutes or more, and during terrestrial cellular tower outages, live location updates would drop off entirely, impeding teams from making time-critical decisions about where to stage or re-route trailers and equipment. When Lodging Solutions asked for support monitoring generator engine diagnostics through direct CAN bus integration, their previous provider instead proposed replacing the existing gateway hardware, citing reliability issues with its solar solution, rather than expanding the platform to address the underlying operational monitoring need. Just as critical, support fell short. During high-pressure deployments, the team lacked a responsive partner who understood the urgency of their work or shared their long-term growth vision.
The consequences were felt beyond the business. Delayed asset visibility meant slower coordination for their clients who depend on Lodging Solutions for basic necessities.
"Each trailer represents a critical piece of our response infrastructure. We can't afford to lose sight of even one," said Savannah Kincaid, Special Projects Administrator at Lodging Solutions. "If a sleeping trailer doesn't arrive, someone isn't sleeping in a bed that night. If restroom or shower trailers are delayed, there's nowhere to use the facilities—and without tent trailers and culinary supplies, there's no dining hall or hot meals. Every asset matters."
